  • Favorite pieces of lyrics

This is a thread for your favorite lyrics -- not whole songs, but snippets of songs, one- or two-line segments of songs that speak to you for whatever reason. I often find that one or two lines from a song keep coming back to me.

One of mine is from "I Can't Quit You Babe" by Led Zeppelin via blues great Willie Dixon. Several bands have done this old song, but these lyrics, and the way they sound in my head, are from Led Zeppelin's version.

"Ohhhh ohhhh ... I can't quit you babe
"So I'm gonna put you down for a while ..."

This comes back to me again and again. I think it's brilliant. Don't laugh -- brilliance often seems simple on its face.

I still can't get over Warren Zevon getting away with this in a pop hit:
I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's
Gonna get a big dish of beef chow mein

First of all, it's just bizarre. Second, what a lyrically pleasing sound that fourth line makes, as if those words were MEANT to be sung on the radio. Beautiful.
But I'm disturbed! I'm depressed! I'm inadequate! I GOT IT ALL! (George Costanza)

          "We don't need no education.
We don't need no thought control.
No dark sarcasm in the classroom.
          Teacher, leave those kids alone.
Hey, Teacher, leave those kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

I hate to be picky about this, but that's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II." Sorry.

snip the entire cd of "Jagged Little Pill" by Alannis Morrisette. It is my all-time favorite cd, and each song has meaning for me (suprising perhaps, as I was not going through any turmoil in my relationship, but it did come out at the time when I was strong into my womanhood, hence da impact).

Oh, Pua'i Mana'o, if you love Alanis, you might also love her musical godmother Marianne Faithfull. Try the song "Why'd Ya Do It" for starters.

Faithfull's work was somewhat overshadowed by her relationship with Mick Jagger, but she has pure talent, IMO, from poetic to punk. If you're familiar with her music, I apologize for presuming otherwise.

Lyrics to "Why'd Ya Do It" here. Not for the easily offended.

we were probably listening to that about what 5th grade....and it stuck in my head from then till now...

and still to this day... I wonder about the teachers and education...?

I'd like to find your inner child
                          And kick its little ass.

                          .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Why don't we do it in the road?

Ok OK, it's the "whole song", but it's only 3 lines...
