Re: Smiley Limits
I'm not worried about the limits on smileys...
I was just wondering if there could be more options then the 11 that are now offered?
Something like these smilies a) Laughing B) Crying C) Embarassed D) etc.?
However, to the other things mentioned previously... I like the use of smileys as it can help a statement I make not be to misjudged.

Re: Smiley Limits
^I agree. Sometimes those smilies can get distracting, especially when there's a smiley after every word. Surely if you've really got something worth listening to you won't need a whole lineup of smilies. Anyhow, having a limit of just 2 smilies or so per post is more than sufficient, I think.

Re: Smiley Limits
Some folks love rows and rows of smileys. Some folks think they're just a crutch for people who can't (or won't) simply crafting a message that conveys all its sentiments - from silly joking to sad irony to sarcasm - in words.
So. I think we've got a happy middle ground here. Some smileys, but not too many. And yes, that smiley was meant ironically. Or do I mean jovially?
FWIW, I wouldn't expect to see animated smileys added to the built-in selections anytime soon, either. (Of course, if you host your smileys offsite, you can insert whatever you want.) I might be a wet blanket, but I think images should enhance or accent a message, but not distract from it.

I vote we eradicate these infernal things altogether and hunt down the foo' who originally invented them and their prolific ridiculously multiplying offspring.
I also vote that we assume the reader of our post is intelligent enuff to understand the mood, feeling and essence we are communicating without the assistance of these too colorful little cartoons. It gets to be distracting and makes discussion boards resemble a ren and stimpy meets southpark show.
je'like emoticons. A goofy substitute for actually communicating your message in words. It gets to the point where these things become the message and point in themselves in the post rather than words.
I am beggining to see this tossed into messages too often:
LOL
to the degree where the person posting apparently wants us to think they are a raving looney rolling on the floor gaining great humor from what they just posted. That's the image one gets when you see three or four of these beginning, midpoint and at the end of the post.

Re: Smiley Limits
Well it is kind of like limiting "free speech". Sometimes people need to get more emotional about some issues and need more smileys.

Re: Smiley Limits
Too many smilies can be very distracting and could make a place seem very petty! So I'm for the limiting of smilies.

Smiley Limits
I was replying to a message and wanted to use a row of smileys. After I posted my reply I got this terse, computer generated message:
You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.
Images include use of smilies, the vB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.
Just thought I noted this in case anyone was wondering.
