    Re: Braces dentist

Honolulu magazine came out with a good list in their February 2007 issue. (This is just a teaser page; the full list goes online March 1.)

I know the orthodontist featured on this page; she's my high school classmate.

The doc who did my braces way back when (George Masumoto, DDS) is on that list too (I have the magazine in front of me).

When I was a kid, growing up in Mokuleia, there was a neighbor kid with braces. I hear he's grown up to be a dentist...Bryan LaPorte.

Drs. Art and Malia Kamisugi, father and daughter, on Young St. are both orthodontists. I'm hearing great things about Malia's work. Like father, like daughter, I guess. Oh, Malia is also a big wave rider!

Michael Wong was my orthodontist about 13 years ago. Back then he was with Dentistry for Children at Kapiolani, but I'm not sure if he's there anymore.

I remember it was all about Iolani and Indiana for him as he worked on my teeth.

Thank you, Dr. Wong, for making and keeping my teeth straight!

Thanks for all of your responses! I forgot to ask--only because this is my first time going---do they charge for initial consults?

i second the vote for george masumoto. even tho i was non-compliant about my rubber bands, he and his staff were gentle and congenial.

can't answer the initial consult question for sure but i doubt they charge for that. like lawyers who want to build a long-term business relationship, i'd think orthodontist wouldn't want to scare away potential patients with a intial consult charge.

(note: i was sposed to wear one towards the rear left in an upside down V and then another that went diagonally from my upper left canines to my lower right canines--and i'm sorry, but i'm exceedingly vain. course, now i'm paying for it bcs my upper and lower midlines don't quite match and i'm a tongue thruster so my upper front teefs are pushing forward again...sigh...gotta bus' out the retainer every night...not that i'm any more compliant now than i was then. point of my story? do what your ortho tells you and make sure you go to all your adjustment appts otherwise you end up kicking yourself later.).
superbia (pride), avaritia (greed), luxuria (lust), invidia (envy), gula (gluttony), ira (wrath) & acedia (sloth)--the seven deadly sins.

"when you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people i deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly..."--meditations, marcus aurelius (make sure you read the rest of the passage, ya lazy wankers!)

I had Doctor Hook, but mainly because his Millilani office made him the closest to the North Shore. He and his staff were nice, and I have straight teeth now. My personal advice would be to pick who's ever closest because you'll be frequenting their office.

Whoever you choose make sure you get traditional braces, Invisalign will take double the time on your teeth.

Then I guess it would inflict half the pain? Sounds like a major selling point to me.
