  • Introduction, some "backstory" first!

Aloha! (Usually whenever I've gone to a big event out there or similarly to the Alohafest down in Houston, they want big greeting back from everybody! So I start off with that thought in mind.)

The first person I remember meeting from Hawai'i came to our small rural school when I was in elementary grades. Statehood had just ...occurred. She was a nurse for a local doctor. We got told about a few island things back then, including the hula but the strong traditions associated with it, of course for kids, was beyond our thinking. Back then kids here did square dance in school. So we learned those moves and we thought that was a sort of a different kind of folk dancing, which I guess was not completely off the mark.

The nurse, we also learned later, returned back because they said she was home sick. I thought that unusual because she was a "grown up" and that was something kids associated with loneliness at summer camp. (Back in '60s it was probably much easier to go back than today.)

Years (who I kidding?)...Decades later I happen to watch "American Aloha" on PBS about the California hula halaus and I finally got many of those forgotten questions about "why do Hawaiians (or at least some of them ) participate in hula?" resolved. It's nothing like just a living history museum demonstration, etc. Early part of that film covers the economics of reality for people/ohana who elect to come to mainland or stay and what importance the culture plays on it all.

Of course other questions resulted (and an grew into an interest--paddling, etc.)and finally I have made some trips out to see some things first hand. Several memorable things and meetings with interesting folks occurred.

Those excursions were fairly frugal. The biggest splurge of all was a Kauai helicopter tour on the first trip ("cause this will be likely be my only chance/trip" I convinced myself) and will likely remain so the way things are going. (I think that's mostly on the "highway 808" heading so enough on that with fares, rental cars, rental places, etc.)

I am trying to get started with the "one man" outrigger canoe paddling here locally as a recreation for myself... and others if they show an interest. There have been some challenges with locating and transporting those 20' long and delicate craft to these parts*, however. I do have old '88 Dodge pickup with rack to haul with so maybe that looks pretty authentic!

So no travel or relocation plans for me now but will be trying to spread some parts of aloha locally if able, paddle in hand. Hope to learn a little more and maybe share an observation or two. Thanks for the chance.

    Mahalo.

PS *"these parts"...well let's just say for now that school where I studied architecture is presently (and locals would probably add "and curiously") in same conference as UH... but this is last year for that and maybe a potential "topic" !

Ah heck! Came back to fix this and "edit time" over/gone I guess...

Realized later that this might be misunderstood. Above is actually me responding to the welcome from the administrator with the email letter that "green lights" activity on HT and not me acting "big shot", okay?

I should know better! Getting "green light" in Honolulu sometimes means that going blindly into intersection is an invitation to be a speed bump for that guy in the jacked up pickup with big tires coming other way! (Or is that more likely on Kaua'i?) Mahalo.

Most residents are a bit more subdued, if I get your meaning right.
An exchange of big "Aloha" shouts is more associated with Waikiki tourist promotions than with local folk. Still, any aloha is welcome. And BTW, aloha - welcome to HT.

Many of our members live on the mainland, some live in Europe and probably other places as well. What we have in common is Hawai`i, either as where we live, a place we love, a goal to reach or something to learn about or emulate.

You will find us a varied group, as much as anywhere else. We have our wiser, quieter members; our know-it-alls; our alarmists; our flakes; and everything in-between. We mostly do try to behave and get along, but we are human. Welcome to Hawai`i Threads.

For the most part, we put the "fun" in dysfunctional! You'll quickly figure out those who don't! Welcome to HT, Merely Malihini.

And, there is always the "ignore" feature, to keep your own world fun from unwanted outside influences.

          Welcome Merely Malihini!
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

Mahalo to all for the greetings (and advice)! I've been sampling some of the posts and while I see many some show real diversity of opinion, others definitely demonstrate concern for well being for others, where ever they may be. A true global community--nice to think about in these times.

              Thanks again.

'Lo Mike! Oh, no much here! But still kicking! (Just that naggin' muscle in lower back this morning...(again)!)

BTW Garden Isle's island I've visited the most.

That's the thing, you make the turn off the road near the hospital to see the falls and next thing you're driving across open fields alot like where I am from...only there's more different than the same!

I don't think I could live in a country area, but I sure as hell love visiting them! What's a good "country" place to visit/stay while on vacation in The Lou?

Not sure if I need to move "travel" to another topic but many people from out of state enjoy discovering the "Joie de Vie" (the joy of life!) in Cajun French areas of south Louisiana, centered in Lafayette or more specifically in Breaux Bridge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaux_Bridge,_Louisiana

I was there for a while. During stay at local B&B until I rented place; met a couple from PA who got so taken with place...they eventually moved there! Local dining place with good reputation has popular breakfast each Saturday...with dancing! http://www.cafedesamis.com/ Note this is 2+ hours away via interstate from New Orleans. As in Hawaii, history has made different areas/islands unique. Here its north vs. south and then to itself, New Orleans!

Now, if someone were fans of UH Warriors football, they might want to coordinate a visit with the farewell WAC visit to my alma mater October 1. (I think everyone is ready for this one particular "long distance relationship" to come to conclusion! Someone told me Tech's travel expenses will drop by 50%!)

I always thought that there'd be some extra interest generated for when these teams from such divergent backgrounds came together but no...mostly it was just the game done and get back on the plane!

I listened/read some of the Honolulu media via Internet about their opinions of our area...boy do we come off quirky! i.e. Bobby Currin talks about the "critters" we have. I have personally seen centipedes there and been very impressed!

(Do know that many UH fans/media do like to do the casinos over in Shreveport, though! BTW the team has usually stayed in Monroe where no casinos operate.)

Well, Mike, how was that for a start?
