  • New Star Bulletin Layout and Color

I check the Star Bulletin Website out everyday. I was pleasantly surprised
to see the new layout and the really nice blue color on the background today.
    Good job in my book.

Whoa, no offense but do you both work for the Star Bulletin in the
      graphics dept. by any chance?

Not to get off track but --
If your paper could just get the printing done right
that would be an improvement. The HSB design already looks better
than the Hon Advertiser, its the legibility and content.

One of the sloppiest reporters is Burl Burlingame who must be about 1oo by now. His wife heads up letters to the editor and the public has no clue.
If you want to correct this guy's reporting by way of an opinion
to the editor or request a correction, just try criticizing him.

It's known amongst media folks but should be public knowledge.
Better yet, no spouse of any staff reporter should be handling editorial complaints. Don't you agree?

I'm new to this blog but has anyone mentioned the
Star Bulletin's piece on blangiardi (KHON GM for at least a few more days)?
His quotes were made up, the story went back to the owners, caused
pilikia about the duopoly with KGMB and wasnt it burlingame
who screwed it up or maybe it was Tim Ryan, but he got fired.

I wouldn't know what else to say about graphic design.
Content is a more important concern for me.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Burl is one of the best there is. Sounds like you wrote to him with some complaint or disagreement and didn't like his response. <shrug>

              MadA,
No actually he covered a number of stories the past 30 years, many
great but it only takes a few sloppy pieces along the way. Look at what
happened to Tim Ryan. burlingame is about ww2 and his
stories tend toward favorite topics, personal opinions taint many articles, short of out right bashing those whose opinions are not like his. If you are not involved in a story he's covered or if your business or project was
never covered in error, it might be tough to understand.
              You read what you read.

A writer is not supposed to get the basic facts wrong. He's been getting
more "loose" as the years go on. If you're interested
ask tv journalists, authors of books he's not written but wishes he had,
              people in his field.

You're the person we sent a message to (new to HR) when we read
over some of the archived materials. Nothing personal but your "gossip"
about certain folks is way off. We could only shrug, those of us who
know some of the folks you mention. No hard feelings though, I enjoyed
              reading your comments otherwise.

                Layout and color?

                Hi, this is Burl Burlingame.

                Testing, one, two....

Actually, I've only been with the paper for 26 years. If Candy has been reading me for 30 years, then he must have been in school with me.

And I'm 52, not 100. More than halfway there!

Alas, I can't tell from Candy's scattergun approach what the specific complaint is, unless he's one of those anonymous moles out there who are always complaining about the "liberal media."

No kidding, I thought Candyglass was a girl. You know, throw like a girl, walk like a girl, surf like a girl, kiss like a girl, I do all that stuff. Heck, I even write like a girl!

Yes, Candyglass could be a girl. Who knows? Was it something about Candy's posts that seemed particularly girlish?

Well, after reviewing the earlier posts in this thread, I'm now thinking rabbit, hamster, hummingbird, housefly, mosquito, something both ernest and hyper at the same time.

                          Well Hello ... There!

Is that you Burl? And LavaGal, thanks for taking the time.
First of all, I've been accused in the past (no joke)
of being "difficult to distinguish" that is, in reference to gender.
So let's not let that get in the way.

Burl if you are indeed Buzz1941, I happened to read some
of your older postings and my my, some rather vicious commentary
on your colleagues and peers. Examples? more than a few.
Complaints from subjects? can't get others in hot water if they don't confront you directly and if they have it has not deterred you from sloppy reporting. Can't say you strike me as having done so with malice, more like
you opine. You let personal feelings sometimes cloud the story.

I was curious, so I took a look too. Huh. I called Lee Cataluna a Hawaii treasure. Vicious! Stuck up for a two-newspaper town. Terrible! I haven't actually done much posting. I used to blog in favor of a two-newspaper town, maybe that's it.
The only clear complaint was something about Rick Blangiardi. The only time I've talked to Blangiardi in years was on a ratings story about a month ago. Blangiardi said three things: That Emmis was still owned both KHON and KGMB (true at the time). That KHON is still dominant but KGMB has benefitted from a strong CBS lineup. And that in his opinion KHON and KGMB have been the only stations that have mattered since he began in the business here.
These seem to be pretty straightforward statements. My opinion has nothing to do with it. Actually, I don't have an opinion about Blangiardi's statements. Candy may not like what Blangiardi has to say, but I'm just the messenger.
I recall there was some sort of complaint by KITV folks who complained that KGMB was lying about the figures. But no one ever followed through with any facts.
It's a truism in the newspaper business that if a reader agrees with what's written, then the newspaper is "balanced." If they disagree, then a newspaper is "slanted."
I don't know anybody in the newspaper business who purposefully gets the facts wrong, but it does happen. That's why the paper has a corrections column. And that's why reporters put their real names and contact information on every story.
