Re: News By Any Other Name?
The Hawaiian Paradise Park newsletter is called The Conch.
I kinda like Sandwich Isle Gazette.
KGU's old motto was The Voice of Hawaii

Re: News By Any Other Name?
how about 20155.com? (Hawaii's lattitude and longitude coordinates are 20 and 155)
just a thought

Re: News By Any Other Name?
Reviving this somewhat obscure but surprisingly interesting exercise to note that I've also secured HawaiiStar.com. Not sure if it'd beat the current champion, "none of the above," but I gotta say I like it better than most of the other presented alternatives (which not coincidentally expire soon, and will probably be let go).
I loved re-reading dick's post. I do dream in grand terms but ultimately come up with things that are directionless and cobbled together with duct-tape! I still don't know what I'm thinking, but I do know HawaiiNews.com may find a new life without me.

Or you could translate "gatekeeper" into Hawaiian.

Re: News By Any Other Name?
This isn't going to be a Web 2.0 type of thing, is it? Because you're going to have to remove the ending "e" if it is. (Hawaii Ledgr, Hawaii Blottr)

Re: News By Any Other Name?
Well..... My problem is I still don't know what kind of news site you're thinking of running. I'm somewhat attracted to "Hawaii Vox" because, well, it's different. It also rhymes with "pox" which could be an asset or a liability. Oh, maybe:
Hawaii Vox
A pox on the status quo

Re: News By Any Other Name?
Ah, Hawaii Wire was on the short list. Sadly, 'twas already taken. Hawaii Files and Hawaii Citizen similarly claimed. And there's "Blotter" again. I wonder, though, if that's a word that you hear more inside the news biz than on the street? Or maybe I need to spend more time on the street? Heh.
Yeah, HawaiiNews and HawaiiStories both have a lot of potential that's woefully unrealized. There's a good chance this new project will similarly stagnate. I'm great at coming up with ideas. It's actually executing them that's tricky!

Re: News By Any Other Name?
Along the line of news services, such as Associated Press or UPI, how about something like:
Hawaii Wire
Hawaii Files
Hawaii Blotter
of course, they could all have THE in front of them.

Originally posted by pzarquon View PostI do too! But my plans for that site are distinctly and perhaps disappointingly mainstream. I did consider expanding the brand to include podcasts and topical blogs, but... ultimately I've segregated that "new media" stuff in my mind.
Hawaii Citizen Journal
Hawaii News Blog - perhaps a sister site to Hawaii News
You could always re-do Hawaii Stories
Hawaii Citizen
Hawaii Town Crier
Hawaii News Bulletin
Hawaii Citizen Weblog
OK... my brain hurts... I'm sure these are just as good or bad as other names already suggested.... just thought I'd throw these in.
Hawaii News has a good ring to it.

Re: News By Any Other Name?
Very perceptive, Dick. I did start where you'd think I'd start, which was HawaiiVox, believe it or not (currently tied with "none of the above"). Something unusual, fresh, maybe gimmicky.
But as I tossed around and narrowed down ideas, the shift to names that sound staid and established was very deliberate. And if Hawaii Post or Hawaii Free Press or Hawaii Times or Hawaii Review were available, you bet they'd be on the list.Hence the inclusion of Picayune, which is pretty random and, of all things, inspired by Berkeley Breathed as much as the real world!
I suppose you could say invoking such mastheads leaves big shoes to fill. Or it could also be mere whimsy and folly... nemed specifically because it's not what you'd expect.
In any case, I love and appreciate the input. I'm glad some of you thought this exercise was as fun as I did! Even if the consensus is becoming, "Back to the drawing board."
