If I were to make an uneducated guess, I would say when it comes to certain things in life, it is very easy to crunch the numbers so that they are to one's benefit.

How can the Advertiser be losing money when it seems that it has more ads in it than Midweek? I remember about 10 years ago putting an ad in the Classifieds to find a possible tenant for a rental. It was costly then, so you can imagine how expensive it is now.

Alas, the workers at the Advertiser are getting a very small taste of what it was like when Gannett tried to kill the Star-Bulletin. One important difference — the Advertiser will survive, in one form or another.

And to think it was once rumored Gannett was interested in buying a local tv station here.

Thank goodness that nightmare never came to pass.

Journalism seems to have changed a lot and of course now it is all about the almighty buck.

Hence the blurring between entertainment and news.

I've seen it happen to CNN and I've seen it happen to the Advertiser.

How many feature articles do we need about Ala Moana's "Bodies" exhibit anyway?

Of course the Advertiser relies heavily on Ala Moana ads to survive, but do they take us for idiots?

    Commercials disguised as news.

I smell a newspaper that could go under due to really poor leadership.
The Star-Bulletin closed that division of writers and photographers when they moved to the makai end of South Street. But there were more writers who shot pictures than photographers who wrote stories.

There aren't that many photographers with writing skills. The Star-Bulletin had three with journalism degrees. Two left and a third is now doing something other than photography.

The Advertiser doesn't have any photographers with a journalism degree, and the older ones certainly aren't writers.

The previous generations of photographers and writers were specialists. It's the younger ones who have greater flexibility -- unfortunately they also have less seniority and are at risk of getting laid off first.

I think the term is MoJo, coined by people at Gannett.

Best wishes to all the families affected (even the employees who still have their jobs but now have a bad taste in their mouth and knots in their gut)

I'll be curious how Dick Adair came to be laid off, if the union contract heavily favors and protects seniority. He's been there decades, I think.

Horrible news. Not unexpected, but horrible for the people involved. It'll be interesting to see how guild negotiations go from here forward -- I doubt they'll be warmer than they've been so far!

I think KHON reported that Dick Adair and a photographer were two.

I hope not. Prayers for everyone that they land on their feet and soon.

    From the Advertiser:

"The cuts include three full-time and one part-time newsroom staffers."

Others likely to be less hi-profile backroom types.

Not that it really matters - loosing a job is bad not matter the possition, but what were the positions that were cut (if anyone knows).

Sorta puts the Advertiser workers in an uncomfortable position when it comes to their contract negotiations.

Any dissent? Don't like what we're offering you?

    No problemo.... *axe falls*
