    Re: MidWeek insert changes

I will neither confirm nor deny that PZ is, could be, or ever has been a source.

I do welcome direct contact, of course. Some of the best tips come from casual conversations (either mine, those of others, or those which are overheard and shared with me!) ... and of course no names are ever mentioned by me, or any journo worth their salt, in checking such things out.

Having said that, I agree with Maddie and thank Lika for their posts. If you see something in a newspaper or on a TV station or hear something on a radio station that grinds you -- LET THEM KNOW. (Emphasis, not shouting.)

You, as consumers of the media to whom the media are accountable, have every right -- and some might say -- the obligation -- to directly communicate your praises/concerns/condemnations.

I'm just trying to encourage direct feedback to the sources, das' all.

And yes it works. John Berger is just as concerned as I am after I emailed him about that "ahem" other thread. But I wrote a balanced letter so as not to sound accusatory or judgemental.

Neither will I. I wrote an letter to the editor and emailed it Don once. It was the only letter to the editor I’ve written in my life to any paper that didn’t get published (and I've written many). Any paper that censors with no explanation sucks in my opinion. Screw the pie-in-the-sky survey. I doubt more than 20 percent of the people who receive MidWeek actually read it.

Yep, I'll give Berger credit in that regard. I've sent brief notes to him in the past and he's always taken the time to reply.
Interesting that most of the folks in the print media will reply, while most in the broadcast media won't.

Censors? Huh? Only the government can censor.

The Star-Bulletin (and, I'm sure, MidWeek) receive far more letters than we can publish. At the S-B, I go through about a hundred e-mails and letters a day.

There is no way I am going to explain to 92 letter writers why their particular letter didn't make it into the paper. However, if someone calls or writes to ask why his/her letter wasn't published (and includes relevant info such as NAME and WHEN he/she wrote), I will, of course, respond.

It astonishes me that anyone would try to find offense in that.

I've heard Maddie on the phone with these people. She always sends them away with a smile, even if she has to grit her teeth to do it. Impressive.

What Maddie says to the caller:
"I'm sorry we couldn't use your editorial have a nice day"

What Maddie really wants to say to the caller:
"Well if you didn't write a friggin' novel like Craig Watanabe maybe...just MAYBE we'd consider your editorial"

Wait. Are you saying MidWeek is NOT media? Who knew Sansei could be so funny?!!

I read Ron Mizutani's column today in my MidWeek that was delivered this morning. His column is called Currents, so I'm guessing it will be about canoe paddling or related issues. He wrote about Steamboat's family and high school paddling.

I'm glad Ron is back at KHON. Having taken two disasterous forays into public relations myself, I know what it is like to sit in your office and say to yourself, "what the eff am I doing here?" Not all journalists can cross into PR. Some have, and do it well: Ann Botticcelli, Stu Glauberman, Peter Rosegg, Alison Hellwagen, Barbara Hastings, Frank Cho. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but hey, that's their PR shortfall, right?

I thought I heard somewhere that Ron's new column will be written entirely in Hawaiian.
