  • KKUA-The Big 69 - 60s 70s & 80s

    Hello,
I'm a broadcast engineer here in Michigan. My wife and I were married in 81 and went to Hawaii on a honeymoon. I loved the Big 69 jingles and ID's.

I was wondering if anyone has any MP3 or wav clips of the jingles or ID's. that can be emailed to me.
    Thanks!

Former Owner of KKUA Radio Dies

    Owner guided KKUA to prominence

Retired television and radio executive Bob Wilson died at his Waialae Iki home Wednesday morning after a long illness. He was 84.

The former owner and general manager of KKUA 690 AM brought that station to prominence as Honolulu's top rock station in the 1970s, said KSSK radio personality Michael Perry.

"He gave me my first paycheck after the Navy" in 1972, Perry recalled.

        Re: KKUA-The Big 69 - 60s 70s & 80s

I too grew up on the sound of the Big Six Nine.

Had the good fortune to work for Ron King who was the program director of the original BSN.

He said that those jings were done by the Johnny Mann singers (it was the KHJ package) and one day while on vacation Bill Drake called him and told him it was the best copy of the Drake sound that he'd ever heard.

Wish I had a copy too!

I still got some old cassette radio recording of KKUA that I transferred to MP3. On them contain some of the old jingles and those memorable commercials from The Ritz Men's Store and others dating back to 1977.

              Re: KKUA-The Big 69 - 60s 70s & 80s

              Wow Mel,

              Great names/memories from the past...

Jim Peters 6:AM, Steven B. Williams 9:AM, Gene Davis 12 noon, Ron King 3:PM, Scott Edwards 6:PM, Dick Wainwright 9:PM, Rick Shannon Midnight

Those were the days 3 hour shifts.

I knew Scotty when he worked here. When I moved to Vegas in '75 was surprised to hear him doing nights on KLUC 97.5. Was an eclectic CHR/AOR mix at night. I was working part time at KENO the AM CHR. We got together and he said he was leaving (comming back to Hawaii to program K108) and would introduce me to the PD.

I got his gig when he left, then moved to middays when the PD got off the air. Really a strange radio station (in a good way) very tight knit group of people and quirky.

Anyway came back to Hawaii in '76 and Scotty hired me to do Nights on the Disco station K108... Tom Dancer in AMD, Jack Waters MD, Dan Cooke PMD me at night and Brother Sam overnights. The place was owned by Dick James and his partner Ron (forgot his name). Ron King later replaced Scotty and Don da Hummer replaced Bro Sam.

Wow don't wanna go back there again.

I also was fond of the RJ KKUA with Keala Kai, Mike Perry, John Syra (sp?), Kong and Mark Morgan.

              OK enough back in the...

Memory not what it used to be...

                  Was Mr. Mellow Lane Robinson?

I believe he is alive and well and living on the Mainland.

I have at least one cassette tape, maybe two, from 69 KKUA dating back to 1981 (I think it was August--I have the dates written down someplace). I would be willing to make a copy and trade with anyone else that has old tapes from around that time!

                    Let me know!

I think I have a KQMQ tape from 1985 and a 98 Rock tape featuring Shawnee from around 1988. I'd be willing to swap MP3s or something. I have to find the tapes and make the MP3s from them.

Mel, you can upload audio portions to youtube and putfile. Kimo and I have already put excerpts of some vintage KKUA 1977 up there already. Check my post on Steven B. Williams.

I'd love to make an MP3 of these tapes but I don't have the software to manage it anymore. Suggestions for what I can use? I have a windows platform...

Also how would YouTube handle something that large? I imagine I'd need to break it up somehow...
