  • KHNL's Bogus Promo

Thought I'd share my frustration over a promo airing on KHNL/KFVE claiming KHNL.com as the top website amongst broadcasters. They refer to a Marshall Marketing(they are Marshall's client) study that ran one week in August, 2007

Truth be known, here are the Neilsen Netrating numbers for the entire calendar year 2007. We cannot use these in an on air promotion since some numbers do not meet minimum reporting standards.

Average Unique Visitors by month 2007:

    KITV.com 263,000
    station a-109,000
    station b-78,000
    station c-48,000

Thought I'd set the record straight amongst the media types that visit Hawaii Threads.

    Aloha,
    Mike Rosenberg

Eh Auntie, I hope that deployment will be a blessed one for your keiki. My boy is slated for deployment to Afghanistan in April, so he's gonna come home for a pre-deployment leave.

        Now back OT!

            Mike:
We feel your pain. Maybe KHNL is reeling from its recent spate of bad PR with Angela Keen's lawsuit and the departures of Marvin Buenconsejo, Darren Pai---and the recent obsession: Where's Shari Shima?!! Tight sweaters and Wonderbras can only get your news station so far, right Mike? I realize that's not fair, but it's what I often think of when I'm watching. Sometimes I like to watch for news implosions and that station provides the most.

I visit HI news TV Web sites regularly and find the KITV one with its mid-day news broadcast on the top of my list. I then go to KGMB. If I'm looking for a particular story and I know what stations covered it, I check them out for a Web clip, so I also go to KHON and KHNL.

I know people are tuning in to KHNL's 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. newscasts on KFVE, which I think are pretty good time slots for the organization with a spare station handy.

Easy Mike. Have a skinny grande-green-tea latte. Keoke, Catherine, Denby and Jody will keep KITV at the top of the NEWS heap. After all, it's journalism, right?

I've said it before, I'd love to see an entire hour long newscast without sports. Just the news and complete coverage not just highlights. Now don't get me wrong, I think sports is a great segment, but I consider sports as entertainment and not news. Local sports deserves it's own programming and not just a sponsored segment of any news broadcast.

Wow, one of KITV"s senior people posts here.

I gotta say KITV is the station I watch the most now because they always seem to be focused on getting news outside the box...not always going for the easy, obvious story but actually digging up real news.

                Keep it up!

Nah. I say keep the sports, lose the weather. I don't need a weather bimbo spending 15 minutes to tell me it's going to rain tomorrow. Sheesh, give it a rest.

Which is why KHON's weekend broadcasts are also a good bet for unintentional entertainment...

I think KITV's website is rightfully in the lead. Though as busy and cluttered as most other network affiliate websites run by an ad-centric CMS, it's got a lot of information, it's updated regularly with copy and video, and frankly, it's been around a while and proven itself as timely and reliable. (Including during earthquake power outages.)

KGMB, though its current site is young, is coming on strong, and would be the one I'd watch from a news industry perspective. Comparatively clean and lightweight, fairly current, and... well, okay, Howard Dicus' blog is a big draw.

I feel bad for KHON. Their website was gutted and still seems unfinished.

Interestingly, despite KHNL's claim of online dominance, I don't think I ever spend any time there.

Aww come on, that's the best part of the newscast. How can you get upset over someone smiling and telling you all hell's gonna break loose tomorrow. Since I take great offense to you calling Guy Hagi a weather bimbo

Did you just called Trini a bimbo?

I especially like how that bogus promo has the other three bars dipping way low as the khnl bars goes way up.

But there are no numbers saying what any of it means.

Just like their news - fancy colors, no facts, erroneous information... all giving you the impression they have no idea what they're talking about.

                            KITV:

Keep up the liveshots, it looks different and very timely.

Darryl Huff is my favorite. Great stories, well-written with solid live shots.

Again, I like that KITV appears to be thinking outside of the box. They always have in my opinion.

Always looking for the big story. Not taking the easy way out.

Very cool that Mike points out KHNL's bogus internet viewership claim. That spot is absolutely laughable.

                              Kudos on that.

                              But...

I'd like to hear Mike's explanation of KITV having the most accurate weather forecast per some company I doubt any of us have heard of.

I would venture to say 98% of every forecast on every local station is the official report from the government's weather office. Each caster may tweak it a touch via their station's private weather service provider or personal hunch. But in the end, it's all about the same.

Granted KHNL's internet promo is way more bogus...but fair is fair...KITV's weather claim is down that same marketing/pr road. Yes, they attach a "source" but is it really independant? Or is it simply one of those paid for self-serving survey generating deals?
