  • "Lost" Season 2

With the national debut of Season 2 set for September 21, this thread is being set up to discuss ABC-TV's "Lost".

For those Oahu-Hawaii residents who want to catch the season premiere of "Lost" early (before mainland / network TV audiences), you can go to the "Sunset on the Beach" event slated for next Wednesday, September 14. The season premiere of "Lost" will take place starting at 6:30 P.M.

    http://starbulletin.com/2005/08/22/features/story1.html

(See the blue sidebar for the "Sunset" on the Beach thing)

That said, the national TV broadcast premiere for Hawaii (KITV 4) will be Wed. Sept. 21 starting at 8:PM (the show's new, local timeslot) | 9 & 10pm on the mainland, depending on your time zone.

Use this thread to discuss anything about Season 2 whether it relates to the storyline, speculation of upcoming episodes, behind the scenes and ratings. If you must reveal episodic details, be sure to use the [SPOILER] tags for at least one week after that night's episode airs. There are people who put the program on their DVR, Tivo or videotape for viewing later.

I hope this is a good year for "Lost". Best of luck ABC and Hawaii film industry.

We're hoping to attend the "Sunset on the Beach" event on Wednesday. My Mr. Cluck's T-shirts came in the mail yesterday, so I'm curious to see if anyone notices the reference!

FYI, although it isn't entirely show related, I thought it was worth mentioning here that the cast of "Lost" will be holding a special fundraising event tomorrow at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for victims of the Katrina disaster. Sounds like it might be a madhouse, though.

i never had any desired to watch these mainland-concocted, unrealistically white-casted shows like lost and hawaii. i'm curious as to why this hasn't rankled more locals. i know that some find it repulsive.

on a side note, dog the bounty hunter is huge hit even though the theme is the racially charged white "saviour" busting locals and then "rescuing" the uncouth crackhead natives.

am i the only one that reads through the lines?

i once had a conversation with a newspaper reporter who claimed he could only write mildly critical articles on this theme because the newspaper was "mainland" owned. translation: "white" owned.

Man, where have you been? NBC's "Hawaii" and definitely, absolutely "Dog the Bounty Hunter" have generated quite a bit of controversy based on their depictions of "local" and other cultures. I can think of half a dozen local articles exploring these issues, as well as write-ups in mainland and trade publications. And this message board has hosted more than it's fair share of debates over "Dog." Boy howdy.
am i the only one that reads through the lines?
        In a word, no. Sheesh.

More importantly, it's clear that you don't watch these "mainland-concocted, unrealistically white-casted shows," perhaps out of some principle, but it also makes it ridiculous to cast judgements so blindly.

C'mon. "Hawaii" was specifically trying to depict Hawaii, and therein had problems. "Dog" is based in Hawaii, and is certainly problematic. But "Lost" is not about Hawaii, Hawaii merely provides the backdrop for a totally fictional, unnamed island. It's not about Hawaii. The "natives," if there are any in the show, aren't supposed to be Hawaiian. Heck, at this point, the mysterious characters we've seen are either disembodied smoke and voices or Caucasian.

If you want to start yet another Kahalabrah "What's Wrong With Mass Media As It Relates to Race" thread, feel free. Politics and national issues is what the The American Asylum area is for. Let's keep this thread specifically about "Lost," and for people who actually watch the show.

            Re: "Lost" Season 2

I'm not attacking you. You wrote, "am i the only one that reads through the lines?" So lest you get the impression that the rest of us, or the community at large, is completely ignorant and unaware of the various, deeper, cultural and political implications of some of these television programs, I pointed out that the debate has been widespread. Not just here, but elsewhere. I believe the national Asian media council even made statements about "Hawaii," for example.

I also clarified that "Lost" can't be lumped in with "Hawaii" or "Dog," because people aren't watching "Lost" and thinking, "Look at all those ignorant Hawaiians!" Hawaii is not directly part of the narrative... just the scenery (and fortunately, much of the production and even some of the casting).

Finally, I'm also pointing out that there is a place for serious political and racial debate and tackling the ills of greater society, and a place for the simple discussion of a television program, a bauble of entertainment, some people just might enjoy. Mel introduced this thread quite capably, I thought, so it should be clear what "'Lost' Season 2" was intended to cover.

Before this thread got derailed into another "Where Are The Asian Males?!" brouhaha, I wanted to encourage you to raise your very valid and familiar questions in a more appropriate area.

Posts related to cultural sensitivity of this and any other program can now be taken to this link. This thread is set up solely for the discussion of the TV series Lost in the context of discussing second season episodes, filming the series, speculation and its ratings (as outlined in the very first post to this topic).

My brother and his girlfriend said they're going to take me to that. My mom thinks we're crazy, but my bro's girlfriend thinks it'd be great, especially if it's for fundraising. We're probably not going to stand in line at 11 AM, though.

They're also looking into going to the Sunset on the Beach dealy, that'd rock if they could take me. I know my parental units wouldn't go, they'd rather stay home and watch reality TV. Deadheads...

                    Re: "Lost" Season 2

Well, I don't think you could call it behind the scenes of Season 2, but one of the new Season 2 characters was at the signing/fundraiser today! I tried to get at least two pics of everybody, but the people watching the lines were rushing us through so that everyone got a chance, so I just snapped what I could and uploaded them. Not all the cast was there, I believe Kate was there but had to leave early. The signings started at 12 PM and we managed to get to them at 1:30 PM -_-

                    My autographed cast photo:

That is so, so cool. We really wanted to go, and I thought we might when the event was first announced... but it ended up conflicting, time-wise, with my daughter's first soccer game. We even called the Hilton afterwards in the hopes that it was still going on, but... no such luck.

Thanks for sharing all those photos! I know some of the cast will be at Brunch on the Beach on Wednesday, but I doubt people will be able to get anywhere near as close.

You mean in this photo? If I had to hazard a guess that might be Tim Ryan from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

I wanna go to that so badly. Looks like I'm not going to be able to. Brother has school in the evening and his girlfriend isn't sure. I've been trying to think of relatives that would go, but they all work, have young kids, or live too far. My parents would never go. If I have to, I will catch the damn bus and go by myself, whether or not my mom wants me to.

With the special advance screening of the "Lost" Season 2 premiere a day away, there was a fun little article on Michelle Rodriguez in today's Star-Bulletin (and a sidebar on Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje):
Ana-Lucia came to "Lost" last season, sharing a drink with Jack (Matthew Fox) before the two boarded the ill-fated airplane. Supposedly, she is a survivor who crash-landed on another part of the island. Lindelof has alluded that Rodriguez's character could create a love triangle that includes Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lily).
