  • Reporters- Best storytellers?

    Hello all!

I have been an avid tv news junkie for a while... and I wanted your opinions on story-telling.

Which reporters are the best story tellers? Best writing style?

I'm talking all four stations (KHON, KITV, KHNL, KGMB)

    My personal favorites:

    - Jim Mendoza (boy can he weave a story!)
    - Ron Mizutani (although lately he's talking like every word should be Gospel)
    - Darryl Huff (cuts through all the bull and gets to the heart of the matter)
    - Keoki Kerr (while not the most interesting writer, he gets damn good stories)

mmmm no replies...surely someone has an opinion

Mike Gordon. Alan Yonan. Catherine Toth. Nadine Kam. Betty Shimabukuru. Malia Zimmerman.

But then, you'd actually have to READ the story.

I agree the newspapers got the tv news beat, but ahem... aren't we in the television forum?

Seniority has nothing to do whether or not someone replies to a post or thread you started. People have to be interested in the topic in order to reply. Quite often I have started threads that get only one or 2 replies or zero... for a long time. No big deal to me.

That said, best TV reporters who are storytellers? Hmmmm....

Matt Levi used to do some pretty hard edged stuff on local TV a few decades ago. He was a good investigative journalist.

Bob Loy had some good stories while he was on KGMB. Today he is with the Outdoor Circle as their P-R guy.

Currently? Locally? Darryl Huff... yep, he's ok... Keoki Kerr has uncovered some good City Hall type of stories....

Gary Sprinkle and Pamela Young get my nod for light but interesting stories on travel to exotic places.... Gary going to places where natural beauty and wonder rules, and Pamela showing us how to live it up at some exotic vacation spot or another.

Common thread here? OK... KITV, I guess I spend way too much time watching that station... I dunno. I certainly don't work there, and no one knows me from Adam there either.
                  I'm still here. Are you?

Yes, I noticed too late after I posted that a lot of threads here are viewed but hardly answered...thanks for answering my thread

Matt Levy was the man back then! I was a kid but I do remember he was the only reporter I think who could penetrate the filipino gangs that were becoming a problem on Oahu.

                      Great stuff he had

                        Re: Reporters- Best storytellers?

I used to work for a TV news monitoring service with Jdub, who can pipe in anytime now! hello? DUDE?!!! I got to watch all of the stations over the course of my, ahem, sentence with the firm.

Guy Hagi can tell a nice weather tale. Minna Sugimoto, in the cop-shop pocket, gets access to some juicy stuff. Keoki and Darryl do some real leg work and bring some really despicable stuff to the surface. Pamela and Gary are feature specialists, although Gary does have an environmentalist bent to his stories (which works for me in my present position).

Who do I loathe? People who are so in love with themselves that they have to emphasize how clever they are on air. At the risk of earning a red chicklet I'd have to say Darren "Not So Humble" Pai gets my vote for "Ain't Got No Reason to be Smug" award. My former colleague Kristen Uyeno is too self conscious and seems to want everyone to know she worked on the mainland with every inhale and exhale. Jodi Leong is having fun on TV, even if she's talking water main breaks. That's the way to do it.

Long story short (sorry to get so long!), relaxed reporters, those whose egos are somewhere in the background, tell the best stories.
                        Aloha from Lavagal

I'm curious Lavagirl, why is Mr. Pai so smug in your opinion?

Just wondering, because I know him and that's not his personality at all. But I also know that someone can come across differently on-air than they are off-air.

Sorry, I don't watch the local news. That why I didn't reply. But I felt I should say SOMETHING, even it isn't answering the question--simply because of your goading.

Have you by chance read "Thanks to Threadstarters" here on HT?
