  • Guy Hagi v. Shari Shima

I was a committed Shima fan. Her bright orange blazers, big grin, and reporting from Mai Tais on Fridays are the best. My friends, however, were Hagi people. They appreciated his intensity. I never saw the appeal, until recently. He still reminds me of an over-anxious PE teacher from the 7th Grade, but I'm beginning to see why people like him.

Shari Shima goes more in-depth during her weather report, while Guy Hagi tries to keep it quick and simple, with his emphasis (and expertise) on the surf report (hence the surf photos he shows and the enthusiasm he has about the surf)...That's what I think.

We can all credit Shari for the phrase "...a good amount..."

Weatherheads also say things like "...in the morning hours..." as opposed to "...in the morning..."

There's also that breathing thing. Get it all out in one breath, hit an inhale speed bump, swallow, and start again. It's like clockwork.

I've always wondered why we even have weather people here in Hawaii. It's not like there is much to talk about 99.9% of the time.

My Dad's pet peeve about Shari is the phrase "as well." She uses that phrase about 7X per weather report.

And yes, the gala-gala break is just like clockwork!

I'm just surprised KGMB still has the moniker "Hawaii's Severe Weather Station".

And another question: why does KHNL have 3 weather people, while the other stations have 2?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

At KHNL, Angela does mornings, Shari does weeknights, and Paul does weekends. KITV and KHON doesn't have a weekend weather anchor, and KGMB at the moment doesn't have a local morning newscast. Make sense?

Because it only takes one hurricane to ruin a beach day.

And we always have days (literally) of warning. And, if or when we get a serious one, it'll ruin much more than a beach day. My point was the airtime spent on weather is wasted and could be better spent doing some real reporting.
