But seriously. Please do take the earlier advice to you and go read through previous threads that answered your same questions. Then if you still have specific questions that weren't answered, a lot of us will be glad to try to help.
You said you've visited here before, so my first suggestion would be to come live here for a month or two before making a final decision that you'll possibly/probably regret. The reality is far far different from the tourist image.

I hear ya. I know full well that it's going to be way different than coconut drinks and hula lessons...i watch Dog The Bountyhunter (joke). I will be coming out to spend some time before I decide.

In all seriousness, thank you all for your time and info, I really appreciate it. Sorry if I offended, certainly not my intention.

      well we do have that.
But it also ain't fully overly developed towns full of "good retail" to give all mainland transplants everything they are accustomed to from their own home.
at least thankfully not yet. (tho' many are trying to change that. because their spouse, being a girl, loves to go shopping at their girly stores theyneed. and I beseech you. please do not count yourself in that number)

Here comes a bolt of lightening but I, in some small way, have to agree with Kimo!

When I moved to Hawaii it was to get away from what I call the 'mainland mentality'. I wanted a different lifestyle. I looked forward to adapting to the differences. I wanted change and I got change. I LOVED that change! The change factor has narrowed greatly since my 1978 move. But even in '78, the state bird was the construction crane so the change was in progress then.

I sorely miss all of the mom and pop stores and stay away from malls filled with designer names. It helps that one of my least favorite things to do is shop! I'll take Fisher's over OfficeMax; Tamura's over Safeway; Aloha Makaha over Macy's!

Living in Makaha has, for me, extended my passion for more local style living.

        Just one tutu's 2 cents!

I'm very, very simple in my needs. One thing that's important to note is that this isn't a move for the simple fact of moving, it's a work request that comes with a substantial pay increase. It's not like one day I said, "let's move to Hi. Rather my company approached me about it."

And hopefully that "substantial pay increase" will cover your much higher cost of living in Hawai'i. Figure on tacking on an additional 20% or so to everything you consume...from food, to gas for your car, to clothing, to electricity, to that roof over your head.

I can remember in my younger days, we'd have to go to Hilo or the mainland
to buy clothes, shoes etc. There wasn't much places to buy that stuff in Kona
during that time. I can remember my mom paying 50.00 for shorts for me in
my younger days. Whenever we went to mainland, my parents would buy
our clothes and stuff since it was cheaper.

Now on the flip side, fast forwarding to present day, yes big box retailers
have had a negative impact, but a positive one too. As now we can buy things
here cheaper, when in the past we'd have to go off island.

Here we go, more do-it-yourself due dilligence links, some of which you must complete free registration to fully read. IIRC, they don't all post on the same day of publication, either (though that may have changed):

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald (Hilo side of Big Island):
                http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/

Its sister-paper, West Hawaii Today -- on the Kona side:
                http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/

                The Garden Island (Kauai newspaper)
                http://www.kauaiworld.com/

                The Maui News
                http://www.mauinews.com/default.aspx

Of course my employer, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, posted daily at oh-dark-thirty for your reading pleasure:
                http://starbulletin.com/

... and the other guys (our larger, Gannett-owned competitor):
                http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ap....dll/frontpage

My former employer, Pacific Business News, a weekly business journal that daily updates its Web site. Note, this is not the home page, but it's the quick way to see PBN's daily updates (you may have to register - free - to access it, I forget):
