  • R.I.P. Barack Obama's tutu

    Breaking news at this link.
Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, died today after a battle with cancer. She was 86.
Dunham, who lived in an apartment on Punahou Street, died on the eve of an election in which her grandson was leading in the race to become president.
“She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility,” Obama said in a statement released by his campaign. “She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring.”
Obama flew to Hawaii on Oct. 23 for a 22-hour visit in the final stretch of the campaign to be with the woman he called “Toot,” short for “tutu,” the Hawaiian word for grandmother. He has credited her with his success in life, saying she “poured everything she had into me.”
Her death, which was said to be imminent when he traveled here last month, was announced in a joint statement from Obama and his half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, a teacher at La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls.

I, too, was hoping she would hold on until the election. I'm glad he got to see her before she died, though.

I hope she got a chance to cast an early ballot.

"Before his visit, Dunham had already voted for her grandson in early absentee voting."

Yes, it is aways sad news when a family looses a love one. But, how fortunate for "Toots" - she lived over 80 years of life, and when she finally died she still had happy excitement in her family. Imagine seeing your grandchild running for president - what a wonderful experience. We should all be so lucky as to die in our 80 while in the midst of a great accomplishment in our family.

My sentiments apply no matter which political candidate one supports.

Sad that his historic victory will always be tinged with sorrow for him, though. Just wait for a tear-inducing eulogy to her during his victory speech Tuesday night.

I'm sure his sorrow won't be affected if he gives a tear-inducing eulogy during his concession speech, either.

Well, if Heaven is a place that exist outside of our time, then I'm guessing she already knows who won.

My condolences to the Obama family and relatives.

I doubt that if heaven does indeed "exist outside of our time", that it is worried about earthly things like elections, which are rolling around somewhere on earth probably every day of the year in some country or community or group. With an unbiased mind, do you think that US elections are of a special focus for heaven, more so than any other place??

How about just letting Toots "RIP". Save the politics for another thread.
