  • Crime & Punishment, Justice American Style

Our beloved land of the free has more people behind bars than any other country in the world, we have a higher percentage of our population locked up than any other country, we have some of the harshest penalties in the world, and yet crime continues to be a problem. Quite a few countries with less harsh justice systems than ours have lower crime rates. A huge number of prisoners are in on victimless crime charges, and a huge number of them are in on mere cannabis charges, at a time when the medical establishment is doing legal contortions to make cannabis' benefits available to seriously ill patients. Is there something wrong with this picture? And if so, what?

Similar to the corrupt pharmaceutical companys that enjoy political cronyism/perks and eliminate competition and R&D to the public's detriment.

Prisons are big business, the public be damned. Add to that corrupt judges/prosecutors, false incrimination by failing eye witnesses, shoddy police work and stupid handling of evidence and crime scenes, it's endless. In todays paper http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/2...big_bucks.html

I do hate to lay the blame at the foot of the American people, but they have been such easy marks. In Cal the prison system is now releasing 'low risk' offenders because of the economic crisis. So, if they are low risk, why were they in prison in the first place? The public just eats up every proposal to stiffen penalties, the cutely named "3 strikes" law passed handily. And to be fair, some repeat offenders really do need to go away forever, some crimes are that bad, some people are that evil. Yet because of the art of charging, some basically harmless low value targets occupy $40,000 a year cells at the tax payers' expense. Legalize cannabis? No, not even now in the 21st century with so much medical evidence, so much legal evidence. The public likes harsh penalties. You see how no one raised a peep in Stalin's USSR or Hitler's Nazi Germany, maybe it wasn't entirely that people were scared, they probably felt safer. Politicians and commentators should know better than to stoke this fire, there's no telling how bad a justice system could get, but if you want to get nauseated read Gulag Archapelago, its the human race at its utter worst. Why a lab would fake evidence to get a conviction, why a prosecutor would knowingly pursue a bogus case, why the American public would want to inflict injustice in place of justice is a monument to human imperfection.

Just like some reason that if a person was arrested then he MUST be guilty of something, so good he's going to jail. Most people are just too stupid for our country's own good, and it ain't gonna get any better. Plus, most are so sick of violent offenders (and even the daily traffic scofflaws)
that it's a 'hang 'em now and find out the truth later' mentality

America operates under English law, - innocent until proven guilty. Mexico operates under Nepoleonic law, - guilty until proven innocent. Reasonable or not, Mexico has streamlined their court system! You better watch your peas and cues in Mexico, or you are going to jail for a long time - guaranteed.

            No wonder.

Prosecuting citizens for victemless crimes is a crime unto itself.

Neither is crime a problem, nor administration of justice a solution for anyone other than laborers in that field.
