  • Re: Gun Control

These stats have appeared before but they are worth keeping in mind

    Gun Deaths:

More than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country

More than 30 people are shot and murdered each day

1/2 of them are between the ages of 18 and 35

1/3 of them are under the age of 20

Homicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds

And the primary cause of death among African Americans of that age group

    Gun Homicides (average annually):

    Less than 50: Japan

Less than 150: Germany, Italy, France, etc.

    Less than 200: Canada

    More than 30,000: USA

30,000 might seem like a lot and I guess compared to everywhere else it is, but its actually quite low compared to the number of people murdered by the tobacco industry (~500,000 a year) Thats real clear cut. Booze kills quite a few, too, so does prescription drugs. We should let the gun people have their fun, really. Its only a tiny fraction of what we put up with with tobacco, let them have their fun!

Can today's tragedy AT A MILITARY FACILITY WHERE THERE ARE ARMED GUARDS AND WELL-TRAINED ARMED PERSONNEL ALL OVER THE F'ING PLACE finally put to rest that stupid argument that putting more guns into people's hands would decrease the senseless gun violence in America?

No, I hope not, because I like people to make sense. I happen not to believe that more guns would decrease gun violence in America. But what happened in this incident doesn't show that, so nothing is being put to rest.

As we see from the recall of the Colorado legislators who were in favor of gun control, the voters do not like gun control, and that in a state with Columbine and the theater massacre in its recent history. Nothing will be done about guns. And you can be sure nothing will be done about tobacco, either. There's just too much money involved. Look at Mrs. Obama catching holy hell for trying to keep America's kids from getting diabetes. What the government will do is prosecute medicinal cannabis. Its just so much easier to bully sick and dying people, they are easy targets who can't defend themselves, and at any given time there aren't that many of them and they won't be voting in the future anyway, and its such a nice show, it shows our government really cares. It shows how democracy really works.

Not if you can't explain why those with arms weren't able to quickly diffuse the matter. They weren't available at the right place and time, leaving unarmed civilians defenseless and at the killer's mercy.

I thought you were done with this thread!

So you are one of the gun nuts who thinks that EVERY man, woman, and child in the US should be packing 24 hours a day. It just shows how depraved some people can be.

Arguably, we live in this most violent society in the history of the world, populated with nuts. From my standpoint, this is a fight for survival that trumps any nut's right to own a deadly firearm.

                    Psych!

I think they should have the choice to do so. It just shows how sensible and caring some people can be.

And you say we shouldn't be able to defend ourselves while in such an insane environment?!
How'r you gonna survive some basic nut's attempts on your life without protection?

At least they have a better chance of surviving, I don't think that's paranoia.

Guns all 'round, all day! If you choose, of course.

                    • Another needless, senseless tragedy!

My heart goes out to the families of those killed or injured at the DC Navy Yard. The government dropped the ball on this one, because the shooter had been complaining of delusions for years, and the VA just gave him drugs.

Media reports that the shooter was armed with a shotgun, not an "assault weapon."

Legislators in Washington, DC, and in state capitols across the country are banging the drums for more “Gun Free Zones,” ignoring the fact that the D.C Navy Yard shootings occurred in a secure government facility in a city where guns are banned. It occurred in a 'Gun-Free Zone.'

“Gun Free Zone” signs do not protect anyone from violent madmen. Nor does "strict gun control."

To solve problems, you must first clearly perceive what the real problem is!

But that's where the mata's of this world want us trapped, like rats with psycho gun fixed traps everywhere.

Banning guns and imposing background checks won’t stop these creeps, but armed good guys will. Remember that the Oregon shooter last December stole his AR-15 before killing two people at the Clackamas mall. But he retreated when he saw Nick Meli, who holds a concealed carry permit, draw his gun and point it at him. The killer then retreated and took his own life.

                            Investing in gun companies:
As recently as last December, in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Connecticut, shares in gun makers Sturm, Ruger & Co. RGR -0.66% and Smith & Wesson Holding Co. SWHC +0.39% both crashed.

                            But this week?

The stocks barely wobbled. By the following morning they were actually higher than they had been before the killings. By Tuesday night Sturm, Ruger had hit a new, all-time high.

                            ...
Despite the news coverage, events like Monday’s aren’t really so remarkable. People with guns kill about 30 people (other than themselves) every day in America. The figure for drunken drivers is about 10 people. Yet investors on Wall Street are betting that, despite all the hand-wringing and pious talk, no one will do anything. They are probably right.
Stock market declares ‘game over’ on gun control

18 or so shot in a Chicago park last night, I don't think anybody died. Rest assured the medical cost will show up somewhere, either in taxes or higher insurance rates you get to pay to subsidize all this violence. Its like the old lawyer's saying, if you hit a pedestrian its best to back over them to make sure you kill them because medical expenses are so huge, some victims will be on life support for 50 years, paid with your taxes or your insurance premiums because the cost WILL be paid. Its nice of us to subsidize the cost of the gun peoples fun and the profits of the manufacturers.

Or, like is now so popular in Hawaii you might just drive away and let the person die probably alone and slowly with little to no chance of help.
