I saw an article the other day saying California pays more for its precious prisons than it does for education. To be sure, prisons actually are needed, but like a lot of things their use should be kept to a minimum. Education has a tendency to keep people out of prison by helping people find productive profitable jobs. So cutting education, making it more costly, has the effect of sending more people into lives of crime and off to prison, where it costs about $50,000 a year per inmate. As cute as the slogan 3 Strikes was, as popular as lonnnnnng, lonnnnnnng sentences are, with the masses, it actually costs money, it actually does raise taxes. Funny how well things used to work before Republicans got in power and started screwing everything up.

Look's like we got some areas that can be tapped further for civic needs, like humane prisons and solutions for the homeless, just two of many subjects ignored by those most able to help.
