  • Travel to Las Vegas

Not only is Hawaii a major [incoming] vacation destination, but Hawaii is also the starting point for some of us who travel the opposite direction, that is, travel to the mainland not from the mainland. This thread opens with the topic of travel to Las Vegas.

What's YOUR favorite destination hotel/lodging in Las Vegas?
Do YOU get the best deal by booking individually (air, hotel, car) on your own, or through a travel package?
Do you have any special "hints" for your fellow HTers about travel to LV?

Care to share you knowledge? First hand experiences preferred if possible, since that info is the most reliable as being timely and having accuracy in place name, etc.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

    The Cal
Mainly because I live in the mainland now and being around all the Hawaii locals it's a slice of the comfort and familiarity of being back in the islands. Plus get local grindz! (again I'm in the mainland, so for those coming from Hawaii probably not as important)
Secondly it's affordable. Staying downtown and off the strip it's a lot less crowded and crazy. Plus with the renovations they did to Downtown back in the late 90's, it's actually not that bad and pretty lively at night.

I book individually. When I meet up with Hawaii friends there, they do seem to get better packages and rates since they book Kamaʻāina deals from back home.

As I said above, staying off the Strip will probably save you some $. Unless you're looking to splurge on something fancy, The Cal or other Downtown hotels are more than adequate. Let's be honest if your going to Vegas, you won't be spending hardly any time in your room except to shower and sleep. No need for nothing fancy...just clean and comfortable.

The California Hotel and Main Street Station are basically the home sweet home of Hawaii.
