I don't know if any of you watch the MSNBC Specials "To Catch a Predator" or not, but the men who are caught in the stings look like they could be your neighbor or, heaven forfend, a relative of yours! And they all fantasize about having sex with underage children (both young boys AND girls). And their method of luring the kids is not with candy and an open car door anymore. It's going into online chatrooms and using "social engineering" to get the kids to do crazy things like run away from home to meet up with these scumbags.

So if you have young kids who go online, please, please, please, monitor what they do online. Thank god for organizations like Perverted Justice who, working with local police, are catching these guys before they can actually harm a young child.

It's a crazy world when a pot smoker gets jail time, and sex offender gets probation with "counseling".

Conservatives screwed up with the pot smoker.

Does it really matter if we're on the island? Wasnt some girl here reported missing only to be found downstairs in some perverts apartment downstairs of her house? Or was that the mainland?
These child molestors, if found guilty beyond a doubt, they should be jailed for life without parole or executed, imo...

Since you cannot be too sure, I always err on the side of caution, even if I look like an ass for being over protective of my kids. Get over it. Maternal instinct kicks in. I swear, I can feel the adrenalin when I even think about someone trying to hurt a kid--not only mine, anybody's kid.
As for sex offenders and child predators, they are beasts. And the people who cover up their acts or facilitate their behavior are just as evil. There is no positive outcome from this behavior. Didnt' Austria break news today that it had cracked a world-wide pornography ring? What exactly goes on in a brain that justifies sexualizing children?

I guess you guys know where I stand on all of this!

I understand your concern - I'm also a parent. But, lets face it - Hawaii is a much safer place for children than just about anywhere else. When was the last time you heard of a child being taken here & killed by a stranger? I'm much more concerned for my daughter now that she is an adult than I was when she was small.

You can protect your child as much as possible..........but you can also carry it to paranoia levels. That's not healthy for you or your child. If you bring your child up to fear everyone and everything around them, how in the world will they ever learn to cope with the real world, which does include dangerous situations?

Maybe for kidnapping (after all, how far could you run on an island with a kidnapped kid?), but I'm not so sure about molestation and child abuse.

Yes, he is pretty disgusting. Someone introduced me to him a few months ago & I could barely look at him, let alone shake his hand. I walked away as soon as I could and I wasn't polite about it.

That is bad, I went to my husband's hometown, CoosBay Oregon...they have the highest child sex offender rate in Oregon.

It was so bad! This man walked up to me and started asking me about my baby. I said "hey buddy get the hell away from me what are you a perv?"

My husband walked up and sure enough it was one of the men known for being a predator around town.
It's terrifying!

It's not just Washington State, unfortunately. When you get to Hawai'i, go to the Hawai'i Sex Offenders Registry site, put in the zipcode of your new home address, and then see how many of these guys turn up. The sad thing is these are just the registered sex offenders; a lot of times they just don't bother to report in, so you don't know where they are at all. And because you'll be on an island, the likelihood of having more than one or two sex offenders living in your neighborhood is high.

Yes, it's a scary world out there.

So I live about an hour away from Olympia where this incident happened. I heard about this last night I think and I usually go outside to smoke and I was so terrified because they said he could be virtually anywhere.. They continued to say today that they caught him.. he made a fort or something across the street in the forest... are you nuts?!?!? and my friends wonder why I am protective with my kid. I am scared that some sicko will try to do something and then he will be dead. Crazy. I cant wait to come home. I hate the mainland. This isnt the only sickening this happening in Washington State.
