  • smart engine trojan

It's going around, and I got it. Collected some google-ese on the fixes but my tech sez the latest malwarebytes will knock it out. Anyone dealt with smart engine yet?

I'd like to dload and scan my infected laptop with the newest malwarebytes but my computer won't stay active for 2+ hrs. to run the old scan.
Why does my computer konk out and not revive? I don't think the trojan is doing it, it's happened before.

What version of Windows are you running?

I take it this is a laptop right? If so run on A/C and you will need to check to see what your power scheme is set to.

For Windows XP (set to Classic mode) this is at:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Power Options

Make sure under "Plugged in" that everything is set to "Never", so your laptop never shutdowns or hibernates.

If you are running something other than Windows XP then how you get to the Power Options might be different.

Thanx, I got Vista, but that'll give me something to ask my tech.

Click on the battery icon in the lower right of the screen.

          Click on "more power options"

Click on "chose when to turn off display"

Under "plugged in" chose "never" under "turn off display"

Under "plugged in" chose "never" under "put the computer to sleep"

          Click on "save changes"

This is the same for Vista.

My computer came with Vista and I was never happy with it. I purchased a licensed copy of Windows 7 Upgrade on Ebay for $50 (Costco wanted $110 for it), installed it on the laptop and I am very happy now. Much better performance.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot!

Vista to 7, I've heard of problems doing this, you didn't experience any?

Not a single problem, but it did take about 2 hours for the new OS to install. Be sure and get the "Upgrade" version. That version automatically transfers all your programs, settings, and documents to W7, otherwise you have to re-install all your programs manually which would not be fun.
