  • Dual computer hookup

One house, one computer, now a 2nd computer. How do I link my laptop to the house system, completely independent from the house unit off the same line?
Is there a simple/cheap dual/split connector that we can both use, without interfering with each other?

By "off the same line", do you mean sharing an internet connection? If that's the case, you'll want a router (or wireless router), which goes between your computers and the modem you got from Oceanic or Hawaiian Tel. A quick look on Amazon shows wireless routers for around $30; a little cheaper for refurbished ones. Sometimes the modem you get from your internet service provider has a router built into it.

The router will allow you to network your two computers so you can share files, printers, etc.

If you also want to remotely control your desktop through your laptop (or vice versa), then in addition to the router, you'll need extra software. Some versions of Windows have a program called Remote Desktop. There's also a free version of software called VNC.

If Ron can provide the model number of the modem, that can be determined easily.

Our modem (Toshiba PCX2600) does not have a router in it.
Will I need a cable guy to come out/charge to set up a new wireless router, like the Cisco Valet Plus M20, or can I do it all myself?

i do on-site pc repair stuff, so i have experience with this stuff.
its pretty simple to do. exactly like you said - from the cable modem the ethernet cable goes into the router. from the router the cables go to your pc's.

you probably want a wireless router. you need one thats compatible with what your laptop has, a, b, g, or n.

you synch up the laptop the router and probably should set up the security on it so dodgy neighbors cant surf porn on your connection.

different version of wireless protocols. A and B are older, N is the newest. as it goes down the line it gets faster. No idea what happened to C, D, E, etc

so if your laptop supports N, try to get an N router. its also usually backwards compatible.

Not all the amendments pertain to wireless protocol versions. It appears the following.

                c - Bridge operation procedures
                d - International (country-to-country) roaming extensions
e - Enhancements: QoS, including packet bursting

Regarding the wireless protocols. Ver a operates on the 5GHz range and is not compatible with b and g which both operate on 2.4GHz. n version is setup to be backwards compatible with all of the above.

Hey Ron, not sure if you figured this all out yet, but if your laptop was made in the last few years it more than likely at least has 802.11 G. Look for a router with b/g/n to be safer still as it covers the widest range of radios. If you need help, PM me. I have many years experience in networking. LMK

An advantage of Hawaiiantel DSL: they supply a wireless router at no extra charge with your DSL subscription. When I get a new computer or other networked device (game console or whatever), when the device is set up it finds the wireless networks in my vicinity, I say which one is mine, supply the encoding key my router uses, and that's it. My router and most of my equipment is b/g compatible (not n). Unless you're passing a lot of video signals around the house, I don't think having n version equipment is important.
