  • e-cycling electronics

I'm sure each and every one of us has had obsolete electronic equipment (cell phones, computers, motherboards, etc) stashed away in some corner of the house.

We also know it's bad for the environment to just throw these out because of the heavy metals that are integrated into them, so we don't want to put it in the landfill, but what are the alternatives?

    Here are some suggestions:
EBay's Rethink project offers helpful resources including:
    How to sell your electronics.
    How to donate your electronics.
    How to recycle your electronics.

Freecycle is an international network of local groups for the redistribution of unwanted electronics and other items.

TechSoup offers helpful advice for donating or acquiring used electronic equipment, along with a recycling and reuse FAQ.

CompuMentor offers information about The Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) Donation Program.

The Connected Communities Web site has links to more information, vendors that recycle their own products, and programs looking for donations.

The Computers and Education Computer Recycling Center takes donations and provides job skills training.

The Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT) refurbishes donated equipment for schools and non-profit organizations.

Share the Technology matches donors with schools and non-profit organizations that need equipment.

The National Cristina Foundation (NCF) uses donations to provide learning opportunities for the disadvantaged.

    Old computers wanted
That old computer collecting dust in your closet or garage could get a new lease on life thanks to the Hawaii Computers for Kids Program. The program is teaming up with CompUSA and the City and County of Honolulu to hold a computer recycling day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of CompUSA's store at 604 Ala Moana.
