    Yahoo 'Web Beacons'
Spy On And Track Yahoo Users!
    From Anonymous
    5-15-5

Yahoo tracks all of its users everywhere on the web and the way to opt-out is detailed below. If you have a Yahoo e-mail account or belong to one of Yahoo's many Yahoo groups, this probably applies to you. Yahoo has probably been tracking everything you do online. Follow the instructions precisely to opt out of this. Notice the important part at the very end.

"Yahoo is now using something called 'Web Beacons' to track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing and where you are going similar to cookies. Yahoo is recording every website and every group you visit.

Take a look at their updated privacy statement:

    http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see a link that says web beacons. Click on the phrase web beacons.

    http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/...s/details.html

That will bring you to a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."

In this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link that will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping.

Once you have clicked that link, you are exempted. Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page. Be careful because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if clicked, will **undo** the opt-out. So don't reflexively click that button, or you will undo the opt-out ! Feel free to forward this to other groups."

Yawn. This doesn't sound new or alarming.

I'm on Yahoo! mailing lists (Yahoo! Groups) where alarmist messages like this are set to go out every month. What the author fails to mention is that most websites, and advertising networks in particular, track your movements across both member sites as well as elsewhere on the Internet... and they don't even give you an opportunity to opt out.

Unless you set yourself up not to accept cookies. Which is also a pain in the okole because then you have to remember all the logins and passwords for all the sites you normally wander through...it's not worth it anymore to do that. Your employers will track where you go (if you're using an office computer) anyway.

I just throw away my cookies on a regular basis, clear the cache too.
          I'm still here. Are you?

Re: Yahoo! - A MUST READ!

Regardless of what anyone says about Mel "the author", thanks Mel for bringing that up to me as a Yahoo user.

I always do my internet browsing cleansing. And for those of you who don't shame on you!

First thing to do if you're in IE is to go to the top of your screen and hit the Tools tab and go to Internet Options then to the Content tab There you will find a wealth of useful stuff for anyone to track you (including spouses). I always clear my passwords and forms and never check those boxes to remember those, where do you think hackers go to find your passwords or to find that social security number you put in that secured website form. Clear your forms and passwords everytime you log off the internet. That's why I have to re log onto this message board everytime.

Under the General tab in the Internet Options window clear the History, delete cookies and files as well.

            And do a disk cleanup.

If you can right click onto the start button, (for those using MS) go to Explore and go to your Local Settings and clear your Temp and Temp Internet Files because the disk cleanup won't do it even if says it will.

Go to Recent Activity to clear out the rest of the History of online visits.

And if you have a Google toolbar, click onto the down arrow next to the Google banner and select "clear search history" or else your significant other may discover your search for "dirty panties" or something disgusting like that.

By the way this also a great way to see where your kids have been surfing or trying to find as well.

Don't get busted Thanks Mel for those links!
