  • Computer worm threat

    Not real sure where to put this, so if it's in the wrong spot Mods or Admin can shuttle it to a new home.

    The new computer threat that exploits the Windows Fax and picture viewer in the form of images has a kinda-sorta workaround and an independant has come out with an unofficial patch:

    The work around is to disable the shimgvw.dll...instructions are in the link.

      *read link* Oh, that threat.

      Meh, update your computer and you'll be set (or if you're extreme, install Linux or *cough* Mac OSX *cough*)

      EDIT:
      here's how to clean a computer that has been exploited.

          Looks like there's some AV programs that can identify it

          Products from the following companies have identified all 73:

          * Alwil Software (Avast)
          * Softwin (BitDefender)
          * ClamAV
          * F-Secure Inc.
          * Fortinet Inc.
          * McAfee Inc.
          * ESET (Nod32)
          * Panda Software
          * Sophos Plc
          * Symantec Corp.
          * Trend Micro Inc.
          * VirusBuster
          EDIT: Here's a patch

                    But I heard that Mac OS people are some of the most unprotected in the IT world (I wanted to reword it another way, but I can't think of the word). I know there's some viruses/threats to the Macs out there, but Macs are used on 10% of the population.

                      OS X Virus
                      Benjamin Daines was browsing the Web when he clicked on a series of links promising to deliver pictures of an unreleased update to a computer operating system.

                      Instead, a window opened on his screen and showed strange commands being run, as if the computer was under the control of someone -- or something -- else.

                      Daines was the victim of a computer virus.

                      Such headaches are hardly unusual for computer users that run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. Daines, however, was using a Mac -- a computer often touted as being more secure and immune to such risks.
