Google is starting to post better troubleshooting info for Gmail Chat. Apparently it's only supported under IE and Firefox so far, and you have to use http:// to get it, not https:// .

Progress. They seem to have fixed whatever was preventing Gmail Chat from playing well with https:// connections, so now you can chat from within an https:// session.

Got up this morning to find google Talk has added a neat enhancment - Cartoon pictures to add to your signitures! I chose the hand with pen.

My note to my google friends is "Busy, digging my nose!"

Pictures in signatures, or do you mean an avatar (an icon next to your name in others' chat windows)? I think it's an avatar, at least according to the "What's New" update.

FWIW, it's an enhancement to the desktop Google Talk client, rather than to the chat client built into the Gmail interface. It's a simpler interface, so we don't see avatars. There are animated smileys, though, and that's not neccessarily a good thing!
