        Re: video hosting ...

In an article on Slate.com, Paul Boutin talks about YouTube and MySpace and why they're so successful, and concludes that the bottom line is that they're dead easy to use and they're unstructured so you can do with them what you want.

I can completely see that, especially the easy to use part. I tried Google Video but got put off by the time delay between posting a video and being able to view and share it on the web. Waiting period? Verification? Who needs that? I want instant gratification. So of course I switched to YouTube.

And so does just about anyone who wants to circumvent things like copyright law or appeal to prurient interests. Which of course makes YouTube the place to go if you like that sort of thing.

YouTube is still a fledgeling company riding a huge wave of hype and with little to lose, so they're not going to try too hard to catch those softcore porn clips or MTV music videos or movie or TV clips that they say aren't allowed. They know reproducing "Family Guy" highlights is wrong, but it's also what gets kids to visit their site.

Google has investors and lawyers and thousands of employees, and it's in their best interest to provide a relatively controlled environment for supposedly "user-generated media."

YouTube might be the Napster of the video set. They will say that they're harnessing the creativity of everyday people and sharing original, grassroots media for the betterment of all. But if it turns out that they actually make their money because of supposedly forbidden "infringing uses," a torrent of lawsuits won't be far behind.

Not that I was planning to do those things. But yeah, point taken.

At which point, they'll be replaced by some sort of distributed P2P video app. Like Democracy, or something like it.

Here's a Firefox plugin that allows you to download embedded videos. Cool.

It seems that the folks at Google have realized that Google Video's review-and-approval lag time is costing them users. So they've removed the delay.

I know pzarq hates my pointing out web site's bugs that seem to affect me, but google vids crash my mac. Their vids are for some reason much too big. hence, more pixilation.

                          Re: Video Hosting

Google Video definitely needs to work out some of its kinks. It doesn't crash my Mac, nor does YouTube, but it definitely doesn't do its content any favors by cranking up the Flash compression and pushing "full screen" presentation (even though the source video is postage-stamp sized).

The one thing Google seems to be better prepared to do is be a venue for selling video content, which seems to be the long term plan. YouTube's present direction would appear to be ad-supported presentation only. Except they haven't even turned on the ads, and some cool kids are declaring them passe already.

                            Re: Video Hosting

full screen shouldn't be the default. It should be an option.
Youtube seems fluidic. easy to use. Now that I am ali'i there = Director, almost Ryan level, my vids have 1000 + views. wheee.
The friend who i coaxed to put up that cheesy we love tikis vid just emailed and said 9 DJ's from across the country want to play his song on their station. and approx 20 consumers have requested to buy his CD. So, it seems to be a good promo tool with decent, and growing viewership.

Another analysis of the exploding online video market -- the major players, and the small upstarts fighting for a tiny scrap of whatever's left.

While YouTube dominates Web of today, about 240 sites have dreams of success -- or getting gobbled up for big bucks
By one count, about 240 sites now dabble in online video. And chances are many won't survive the next year. Some will simply shut down; others likely will be gobbled up by larger companies. "I think 90 percent of them will disappear," said George Zachary, a venture capitalist with Charles River. "And it won't be pretty."
