    Re: Local Wireless War Drive!

That's why I love living out in the boonies where my property is one acre in size with a corrugated steel roof to shield my router from straying very far outside my property.

Oh the joy...I finally got broadband via a wireless broadband service here called Advanced Wireless. Not too dependable though as their system drops out occasionally, but I still got my dial up when I lose the signal.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

As a public service prior to the war drive that will be conducted on May 29, the Advertiser provides the following info on securing your wi-fi network from being "borrowed" or worse by bandwidth snitchers.

What, we can hack the WPA or WEP codes?

And can we form a group here to do our own study?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

          Re: Local Wireless War Drive!

Both WPA and WEP have been cracked. But again, as long as neighborhoods are populated with wide-open, default-configured Wi-Fi networks, even a minimal of additional security should be enough to keep you off a hacker's radar. Unless, of course, they're looking for your network in particular.

Adri, you should volunteer to be part of this war drive, or at least head down to HPU or Kahala Mall to check it out. Sounds like something right up your alley.

This is a really, really, really cool project, but I hope they stay away from my neighborhood.

I'm actually paying for T-Mobile "hotspot" WiFi now, and it has made my life a lot better, but you know...none of those cafes are open 24 hours and even if they were, nobody there wants to see me naked.

            Well, maybe not nobody.

A late update, but the War Drive was held, the presentations made, and even KHON did a series of reports:For details, hit the Secure 'IKE website. There's a 2.3MB PDF report of its findings, complete with maps (some nice Google Map work there), pie charts, and good advice. More than half the access points were unsecured, and access points were found basically everywhere they drove.

Boy, that PDF report is painfully slow and nasty to load.

                  Re: Local Wireless War Drive!

Definitely. And you know what the kicker is? I'll bet close to 90 percent of that document's bulk is the hexagon clip art in the lower right of the template. Definitely something built for a live presentation, but not online distribution.

I actually know one of the key guys behind Secure 'IKE, so I'll drop him a line and see if that report can't be optimized a bit. It's otherwise worthwhile reading!

                    Interesting.

I'd love to know more info about the locations, and I wonder if people changed their ways?
