  • State of Internet Access on Neighbor Islands

I was wondering what the state of things is for high speed internet access on the islands besides Oahu. I read back over some previous threads and it seemed like people had a lot of good luck with Oceanic/TW/RR in rural areas but there wasn't a lot of mention of areas besides right around Hilo. Any good satellite options that work in Hawai'i these days?

Re: State of Internet Access on Neighbor Islands

I can speak for only the Big Island personally. On the Big Island the broadband
options are Oceanic Time Warner's Road Runner, Hawaiian Telcom DSL. Wireless
Internet is available along with Satellite.

Currently there are these Internet providers
    Pacific LightNet
    www.plni.net
    www.aloha.net 334-4000
    Seismic Internet www.seismicinternet.com
    Hawaiian Telcom http://hawaiiantel.com/ 643-3456
    Oceanic Time Warner Cable
    www.oceanic.com
    www.hawaii.rr.com 643-2337
    LavaNet www.lava.net
    Flex www.flex.com

    PLNI offers dialup,wireless,DSL
    Seismic offers dialup,DSL
    Hawaiian Telcom offers DSL, Dialup
Oceanic Time Warner offers cable modem service. Alternately you can get
    Earthlink Cable Modem Service www.earthlink.net
    LavaNet offers DSL,dialup
    Flex Dialup DSL

Oceanic Time Warner Road Runner is 44.95 a month (Less if you bundle it with
other services). Earthlink Cable Modem Service is 41.95 a month.
It is 5Mbps/384K service ( Soon to be 7Mbps/384K later this year)

Hawaiian Telcom offers 1.5Mbps/384K service for 37.99 month to month/29.99
w/ one year contract. 3Mbps/768K DSL is available for 37.99 month to month/
    29.99 with a year contract.

If you can get Digital Cable service through Oceanic, odds are good that you
can get Road Runner. It is available in most areas of the island, including
    Puna, Kohala,Ka'u,Kona,Hamakua,Hilo.

DSL is available in most areas of the island too :

Re: State of Internet Access on Neighbor Islands

Wow, thanks for all the awesome info. The big island is actually mainly where I need information so that's perfect.

Right now I have a 1.5/864 DSL through a local ISP here and have been pretty happy with it. I did cable for a while as well, through RR and Comcast. Anyone have any experience with doing a VPN (remote work connection type thing, IPsec specifically) over these ISPs? I know some (like RR) like to charge you more for that though they usually won't block it. My ISP here is really great about all that -- for about $55/mo (including the DSL line) I get a static IP and can run the work connection, non-commercial servers, or whatever on it.

Re: State of Internet Access on Neighbor Islands

Well its lucky things have progressed over the last 7 years. Hilo and Honolulu
were the first to get DSL in Hawaii in 1998 and Road Runner was rolled out here
in 2000 on the Big Island. Since then the availability of both has been greatly expanded.
