  • transferring info from outlook to outlook

hi. my buddy is getting a new pc cuz his older one is flaking out big time. the problem is, his outlook has all of his addresses, appointments, etc and i don't know of an easy way to transfer all that info from his old drive to his new drive.

can i upload the info to some mail program like yahoo/hotmail/google and then download them into outlook?

    some other solution?

to do everything manually would take a LONG time so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks!

Microsoft 101: Hit "F1" while in Outlook and search the built-in help for "export." You'll see entries for moving both contacts and calendars.

Still not enough? Search the Microsoft knowledge base.

There's no reason to involve a third-party solution... unless your plan is to leave Microsoft completely, which is always a good idea.

Export to a file, using the Personal Folder File (.pst), make sure you include subfolders for Personal Folders.

As a hint make the .pst file go to My Documents where it is easy to find later on.

After it's done with the transfer you will need to exit Outlook since it is still using the exported .pst file.

Transfer the .pst file from the My Documents to either a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD-ROM.

Then get the file on the other computer's hard drive and then make the attempt to import the .pst to other computer's Outlook. You might have to setup Outlook there first before doing the import.

Additional information: The Export/Import process just transfer information in folders like email messages, notes, contacts and tasks. What it will not transfer are: Message Rules (the Rules Wizard), email accounts and the settings of Outlook. Also for the contacts folder while it will transfer the names of the distrubtion lists but not the members of that distrubtion list. You will need to enter them again.
