  • Nokia phone battery recall

Nokia is offering free replacements of lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Matsushita.

Nokia, the world’s biggest cellphone maker, warned consumers yesterday that 46 million of its handsets contained defective batteries made in China that could in rare cases overheat and even dislodge during recharging.

Nokia said the lithium-ion batteries in question were made by Matsushita from December 2005 through November 2006 for more than 50 different Nokia handset models, from the entry-level Nokia 1100 to more advanced models like the N70 and N7610.

According to a statement by Nokia, short circuits generated by the defective batteries have so far led to 100 incidents of overheating, but none have resulted in serious injury or property damage. Nokia decided on a voluntary replacement program rather than an outright recall because it determined the danger was slight and not imminent, a spokesman said....

Consumers can find more information on a Nokia Web site, www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement, where they can enter the factory code on their batteries. If the code matches the defective series, consumers will receive instructions on how to obtain a replacement by mail.

What is it with Lithium-Ion batteries anyway? Great power and recharging capabilities but wow recall after recall for these things. I got second-hand info from one of my co-workers at Home Depot that some of the Milwaukee 28volt LiOn batteries were blowing up too.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

With great power, comes great responsibility.
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

The chemistry is not as stable as other types. (Keep in mind what chemists call "unstable" the rest of us call "explosive".) Just having impurities can create serious problems down the road.
