Kailua Neighborhood Board sparks debate over tourism
"The Kailua Neighborhood Board isn't happy about Kailua's popularity. It passed a resolution urging the Hawaii Tourism Authority to stop promoting Kailua as a tourist destination. 'Be it resolved that the Kailua Neighborhood Board asks the Hawaii Tourism Authority to respect the zoning and quality of life of our residential neighborhoods and immediately stop promoting Kailua as a tourist destination and alternative to Waikiki,' the resolution said."

Residents, businesses battle over Kailua tourism
Kailua Neighborhood Board Chair Chuck Prentiss says the HTA’s website is the problem with posts listing Kailua B&B’s and vacation rentals. He says it makes it harder for the city to phase out and enforce illegal operations. 'If you had three to four that would be fine, but with a proliferation of them and that’s what happened,' Prentiss said."

    Kailua seeks balance
"Balance is the word many people use these days in response to the tourism and development boom as visitors and Oahu residents flock to Kailua, a once sleepy suburb by the sea. The problem is: Different people have different visions of balance. Stores, tour operators and rental businesses are flourishing and hiring more people, but many long-time residents see their laid-back lifestyle dying, with some saying tensions are close to a 'boiling point.'"

It makes perfect sense to me that the Kailua neighborhood board should make this request of the HTA, and it will make perfect sense when the HTA fails to respond. Promoting tourism is what the HTA is supposed to do, isn't it? If zoning laws are being broken, or if they're too lax, HTA is not the place to go to fix that.

Yes that! It is near impossible to come up with a reasonable solution until the illegal activity is eliminated first. How can you "clean the bottom of the pool" when you cannot even see through the murky water?
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

Heard a lady say to her friend yesterday, "Kailua is becoming rather yuppy".
That was true over 40 years ago!
