Smaller size? Might as well make it bite size.

Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately for eBay Twinkie-hawkers?), the last ditch effort failed.

Twinkies maker Hostess wins court OK to close

By Martinne Geller and Jonathan Stempel
    NEW YORK | Thu Nov 22, 2012 2:56am EST

(Reuters) - U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain in White Plains, New York, authorized current management, led by restructuring specialist Gregory Rayburn, to immediately begin efforts to wind down the 82-year-old company, a process expected to take one year.

"It appears clear to me that the debtors have taken the right course in seeking to implement the wind-down plan as promptly as possible," Drain said near the end of a four-hour hearing.

The judge authorized Hostess to begin the liquidation process one day after his last-ditch mediation effort between the Irving, Texas-based company and its striking bakers' union broke down. Drain said details of those talks are confidential.

    Sounds like a swell guy.

From what is being reported to the media, I can understand why the union is engaging in this strike. Their pension fund was raided, while corporate execs were treating themselves to overly generous raises, some of them as high as 80%. The outraged workers walked out, leading to the company's shutdown. Management responded with the threat to declare bankruptcy and warned the union that all of their jobs were in jeopardy if they didn't go back to work by Friday. Knowing full well that this was likely a serious threat, the workers stood their ground, and preferred to lose their jobs rather than let those vultures continue to walk all over them. Gotta tip my hat to them. Not every labor union has that kind of backbone.

But hold off on making that $100 bid for a box of Twinkies on eBay. CNN is reporting that the bankruptcy court judge is delaying the final closure and requesting both sides to mediate their dispute.

Hostess produced Zingers after acquiring the Dolly Madison brand. DM is also being shut down as part of the closure of Hostess.

As for competitors buying the Hostess name, it looks like El Grupo Bimbo in Mexico may have an edge; they are huge, as are Con Agra and Flowers Foods, other companies that have expressed interest.

I always liked Zingers better anyway and said so the day Hostess went under. But did you know that Hostess was one of two brands that produced Zingers? I didn't until I saw a lone box of Zingers (raspberry) on an otherwise empty Hostess shelf at Times.

How about those Dolly Madison's Zingers that sponsored the Charlie Brown tv specials?

Who knows. Hostess might have gone bankrupt due to labor strife and mismanagement. But their total product sales last year was in the neighborhood of $2.5 billion. Not exactly chump change, is it? Which is why a likely candidate to carry on the Hostess brands will be a deep-pocketed conglomerate.
