While on the subject of SPAM, check out the wide selection of "other brand" luncheon meats available at San supermarket in Okinawa...
And corned beef hash...
This is courtesy of fellow food blogger, Nate, da "HYN Pake in Okinawa". He describes the above as follows...
Pix shows 3 shelves of different brands - Tulip, Celebrity, Mayfair, Midland. Pretty amazing. Lots! Spam is on the shelf above that's not in the picture too. Okinawa - land of luncheon meat! Corned beef hash starts on the right and there's a bunch of that too. Popular dish is cooked somen stir-fried with bit of corned beef hash. Mary Kitchen brand even has a recipe on the can.Last edited by Pomai; June 15, 2008, 10:32 AM.

Re: Spam Musubi Maker
Hah I think we bought that $4 one for like $10 years ago, but of course it came with a free el cheapo paring knife.

Re: Spam Musubi Maker
life is short; get the double maker. The whole sheet of nori fits nicely and it gets the work done in 1/2 the time.
When we go holoholo, we make our musubi with boneless chicken (usually teri chicken, but sometimes fried). Often its from the leftovers of dinner the night before.

Re: (spam) musubi maker
I have bought nori and Calrose rice in Myrtle Beach at Bi-Lo and Walmart. We had a great store that billed itself "Oriental Food Store" in Socastee and it is very well stocked with lots of Asian specialties and produce. So when I got here and walked down the isles in Tamura's not all of it was totally foreign.
LOVE the Spam slicer! Gotta get one!!!

Re: (spam) musubi maker - Marukai and Long's on Oahu
Funny you bring this up. A gal recently emailed me from Guam asking how much SPAM Musubi Makers costs in our stores locally. Turns out, you can find them on eBay for about $10 each.
Being a regular Marukai shopper, I always see them on sale there...
That's actually their regular price. Just the other week they were on sale at $2.99 for the single size and $3.99 for the double size maker.
These are high quality acrylic models imported from Japan (although made in Taiwan). The clear acrylic walls are thick, so when you press down the rice, it doesn't expand out like the cheap (as if this isn't cheap enough!) ones do.
Long's Drugs has similar acrylic models by a generic manufacturer import at the same price, but I think these ones from Marukai are a bit better in quality.
Also available at Marukai is the luncheon meat slicer!...
I had one of these a while ago but never ever made use of it.
If you're in a bind, you can always gut the SPAM can and use that as mold. It works. I tried it. Only thing, it's a bit more challenging to get the rice packed in tight. These musubi makers are much better at making a good musubi that doesn't fall apart when you eat it.
