Soybean paste, called Korean or Chinese Doujiang, has a more pungent smell and stronger taste than Japanese miso. Soybean paste doesn't use grain as the fermentation starter and uses three fermentation processes to get a finished paste, whereas miso uses rice or barley with koji mold to start fermentation. https://www.google.com/search?q=soy+...client=gws-wiz

Try Palama Market or ask one of the people who work there.

Re: Korean Banchan
Mahalo cynsaligia for the info! I don't know if they sell those type of peppers here where I live. I haven't seen seen these at my local korean market. Will check out other grocery stores to see if they carry!

Re: Korean Banchan
Don't know what the first one is, but second one, I'm pretty sure, is cucumber kim chee. There are so many different kinds of kim chee. if you go to Palama Supermarket (next to Don Quijote Kaheka), they have dozens of different types of kim chee. My favorite banchan is won bok kim chee and bean sprout namul.

Korean Banchan
I think this is banchan! I shop a local korean grocery and they don't have these all the time. Anyone know what these are called? I want to make this myself....I just love this stuff!!

The second is is cucumbers. All the red stuff makes it look spicy, but it really isn't. Again, fabulous on hot rice!
TIA!
