  • This is what parts of Hawai'i are becoming?

You know, when I was growing up on Maui, my grandparents used to take me fishing and opihi gathering. I'm pretty sure the places we went were public (OK, and maybe some private property ) but never were we intimidated or threatened the way some locals are being intimidated and threatened on Maui. Who's doing this? Is it the newcomers who don't understand that the local way is to let people use the land so long as they respect it? Or is it a bunch of local vigilantes who are trying to stake out property that isn't rightfully theirs?

Huy Tita Miulang! This brings back so much memories. In my case, it was the Garden Isle of Kauai. My late Aunty Rose used to take us kids (8) all over with her to pick ligdig (shell fish found in mud), pick wild paria leaves in the cane fields, and catch those crazy fish in the harbor (always bit, even without bait) it seem as if all of Kauai was there. Then there was the secluded picnics on private land, everybody sharing their BBQ'S, drinks, and other delicious local foods. Everyone knew each other in that little town of Koloa. Gone are what made it so wonderful when I visited in summers of yesteryears. It wasn't a "me" society back then. It was an "us," together, family oriented, sharing kinda, " May, I use" "Sure you can"........naah, hopefully, we who still live can instill into our children and our grandchildren the magical way in which we can share and enjoy our aina before it's too late.

To put it bluntly...sharing is caring!

didn't realize you're from maui :-) i was born here but moved to (paia) maui when my father's dad became ill to help out. i still laugh when i think about my first day of school (6th grade). i didn't know anyone and sat at the back of the class and thought to myself, "man, so many kids skip school here!" then i found out that that was all the kids in that school! so small! but i loved it...

My guess is that it is a bunch of idiots that have claimed that portion of land as their own. It goes on here as well, but to a much lesser degree. The sad part is that I remember being able to go hunting and fishing just about anywhere as long as had permission and no make rubbish or over harvest. Plenty place to go hunting on private land! Now with the gross missuse of agriculutural land and the beach houses on prime fishing places there is alot of compitition for very limited resourses. Personally I hope these idiots are caught very soon before the situation gets out of hand and people get hurt or worse.

P.S. On a side note do you know that HPD has its very own private beach that you and I (non HPD) cant go for a picnic or to fish/dive. Hmmmm wonder what the cops need with a private beach?

Eh, that place is clean and has good bathroom.

If I known that it was "open to the public" then we can go fishing there.
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Commonly known as "Police Beach". Its just past Haleiwa beach park, the entrance is behind an iron gate. If you have a friend or relative in HPD you can get access but other than that you are S.O.L.. I know of a few people that have been "escorted" off the beach there. I do alot of diving there but I use a kayak from the park side or from Lani's side. Plenty dirty looks from the so called owners. My main gripe is WHAT THE HELL DOES HPD DO/NEED WITH THEIR OWN PRIVATE BEACH?

I usually stay away from questions like this since I have family in HPD and friends all whom I respect and thank for their 24/7 duty in keeping our islands safe so that we can sleep a little better. Yes, there are bad apples too as in everything in life. I've never been to this Private Beach, that you mention...I probably could.

Regarding your gripe...our Officers in Blue sure needs some R&R from today's activities! With the amount of things happening from Drugs, Murders, Domestic Violence, etc. that they see each day...I think they deserve the amenities that comes with the job. Everybody has their opinion and this is just mine. Please don't take this as an offense.

hi aunty. i know you have a good heart so don't take this personally but i think i have to agree with babooze. i know i've heard the argument that they have a hard job, etc. but i don't see how that gives them that special priveledge of a private beach. in fact, it seems to go against the kind of aloha spirit that you seem to have.

unfortunately for me, i'm pretty cynical. used to be more hopeful but i don't have a very high opinion of the police.

my parents, and i'm sure yours told you the same, told me way back when that they never even thought of locking their doors at night. things have certainly been going downhill since then. amazing what we're used to these days. doesn't even raise an eyebrow. sad.

without getting too serious about it all, i'd venture to say that this culture of capitalism is one interesting mind f&#$. it's amazing to think that it's so pervasive that it convinces a lot of people who don't "make it" that they're inadequate, not smart enough, not good enough, not whatever enough.

of course, there are people (fortunately) who still have a loving spirit. diamonds in the rough. sounds like you're one of em. good to see.

aloha shaveice! i know of many crooked and under the take officers that need to be thrown in jail...oooh, did i just say dat? yep, unfortunately, they do exist and make it bad for the good ones. hopefully, with the new DEA in charge, we will see changes. i respect your views. they are excellent...especially me being a diamond! heheheheh

                    good night. god bless.
