  • Princess to donate estate to kanaka causes

Princess Abigail Kawananakoa, one of the heiresses of the Campbell Estate Trust, has announced that she will donate her $300 million share to help the kanaka maoli by establishing centers to teach children about Hawaiian history, supporting hula halau to preserve kahiko, the Hawaiian language, and other causes to benefit the kanaka maoli.

She said she wants to fund centers to teach children Hawaiian history from primary sources, history she called correct.

"History that is written by authoritative people. Documents that prove that this happened and this certainly did not happen," Kawananakoa said.

For 30 years, Kawananakoa has given money to help hula masters record and teach ancient dances. She said she will continue to do it with her inheritance, to keep kahiko (ancient hula), kahiko.

"We have sort of sacrificed our own history by trying to please the visitor and make them love our islands," she said.

Kawananakoa said she will also keep donating funds for Hawaiian language instruction.

"Our Hawaiian language now, and I am going to have a lot of angry people, but our Hawaiian language now is slang. We would call it slang in ancient Hawaii. It is not the Hawaiian way of talking," she said.

She said it is time for Hawaiians to look at life differently now.

"We can't continue to keep resentment and anger," she said.
