Just pau chat with fellow HT'er, JAvendan. He's ok. He's awaiting instructions to evacuate. He has friends and family who have been evacuated already.

Prayers, Well thoughts and Pules for everyone there!

        Re: California wildfires

Thanks for the links, everyone. I was very surprised to read that all schools but the high school in my hometown of Laguna Beach have been closed. That's way more than a safe distance from the fire but I guess the raging, Santa Ana winds are blowing the smoke in that direction.

My daughter did not evacuate after all. She checked the hotline about 2am and it reported that the wind had subsided and her immediate area was no longer in danger. She slept for about an hour...with the tv on! This morning the winds are howling again, the fire has jumped Portola Parkway, a road about a block or so from her Northwood area home, so she's standing by. I just wish she'd pack her car and head on over to relatives in Laguna.

Here's a photo taken from my daughter's immediate area. And that was only 20 min. after the fire started late yesterday!

            Re: California wildfires

Omg my neighbor's roof got blown off by these violent winds in one whole piece that flew and crashed in front of their garage. About half the trees in my town are blown over, uprooted, even whole sidewalks are uprooted. It's crazy. There are fires all around my town and one coming right down the mountain straight at us. It's hard to see and there is ash raining down from the sky in big chunks. We keep losing electricity. Fun, fun, fun. Gonna get off the computer soon so it doesn't shut off on me when electricity goes out again, which I'm SURE it will.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

My in-laws in Oceanside are standing by for evacuation & friends in Rancho Bernardo were evac'd this morning - they believe they have already lost their house.

760 numbers seem to be down. My niece still has her 808 number working so that's how we're getting information.

                  aloha all,

auntie lynn... mahalos for the call!!!

so good to talk to you... miss you lots.

the fires are going strong here in san diego. i'm in northern san diego county - san marcos. there is a fire near us, just one of a dozen here in the county. luckily, the fire by us should be contained by tomorrow - cross fingers!!!

one of the many problems is the low rain fall this year. so everything is dry dry dry. then the crazy santa ana winds blowing like crazy and blowing hoooot embers everywhere.

anna and i woke to the news and saw that they closed the freeways... so, we stayed home. within the hour everything was shut down.

we still may have to evacuate and if we do we'll head west to our friend's house... local girl from oahu - kalihi!!!

we have family and friends that have already evacuated their homes.

best wishes to everyone and stay safe.

                  aloha,

                  joel

Hey all you San Diegans...STAY SAFE. Breaking news on MSNBC:
250,000 people in San Diego County alone have been evacuated. The live pictures are horrendous.

                      Re: California wildfires

My brother and his family had to evacuate their home (mandatory) in Scripps Ranch today and now they are staying with my parents in Chula Vista, parts of which are under mandatory and parts of which are under voluntary evacuation. So far things look OK for them in their area of Chula Vista but my brother is very concerned about the homes in Scripps Ranch (which lost quite a few back in 2003). Hopefully, the winds will subside and the firefighters will be able to contain the multiple fires soon. Homes and "stuff" can always be replaced....it's the precious lives that are most important.

                        Re: California wildfires

No school for the kids today. The sky is a hazy, dark color.

The 3 fires around my town are under control, at least I think they are. But last night it got too close for me considering the winds going on, literally across the street. So we went to my mom-in-laws place for the night. About 4 years ago we had very similar fires to these. My home was one of the lucky ones at that time. It was heartbreaking to see streets of houses gone, and a lot of times maybe one house standing still. I moved from that area a while back but when I drive past, to this day, there are plenty of empty lots.

Anyway, like I said, yesterday when the fire started creeping over the hill in front of my house, I was outta there!

The Santa Ana winds carry those embers FAAAR. You think you are safe but then suddenly out of no where your house is on fire.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

Just to show some of the wind damage, here's a picture of a tree that got blown over and took the sidewalk with it.

I took this picture with a camera phone from a moving vehicle so it's blurry and zoomed in too close but oh well.

Wow, LeiKaina that's spooky! Too close for comfort!

I spoke with my San Diego friends again this morning. They were evacuated yesterday and spent the night in Torry Pines Hilton. Well, they just got booted from there - evacuated again. They can't go north because the freeways are closed. They're not sure where they are going now.
So long...and thanks for all the fish!

I lived in Los Angeles and Orange County for several years. My prayers to my old friends and neighbors there, as well as the thousands affected.

Besides the rampant elitism and cultural ignorance in the area, the Santa Ana winds were my least favorable aspect of living in otherwise lovely Southern California.
