  • What the heck is this?

This thread is inspired by Mike_Lowery's thread about the Kakaako Pump Station. I've noticed other similarly unusual or mysterious things "hiding" in plain sight like that. Stuff you see all the time and just never really question.

Here are some of the ones I already know....

Here's the Kakaako Pump Station, just to have it on this list...
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=21.298254,-157.862817

    The Burmeister Overpass:
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.366956,-157.841215

There's a big metal door about 4' off the ground here. I've been told there's pumping equipment behind this door, but it's surprising how many people never notice the door.
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=21.301105,-157.833975

Ok, now for the stuff I don't know. Maybe someone here knows what these are....

What's this off 10th Ave? You can't see it in this map, but it looks like there's an entrance to an underground facility here.
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.285077,-157.799282

Where does this road off the Likelike go?
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=21.374846,-157.821275
I assume it goes to this building, but what's that?

When I was learning how to fly, I spent a lot of time in the air above Kunia. I noticed several buildings hidden in the foliage far above Makakilo. What are they?
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.390918,-158.099769

Is this a house? It's HUGE!
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.62865,-157.921584

Speaking of houses, this is something I noticed while flying. Is this someone's house? It's way in the middle of nowhere in Mililani Mauka:
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.482962,-157.971447

Anyone else notice any mysteries "hiding" in plain sight or on Google maps?

Offhand, I don't know any of these, but I'll lay in some ideas. Any or all could be wrong - just my guess.

There are huge metal doors all over O'ahu. Many on military bases and some are storage, some are ammunition storage and some are underground hospitals (like the one on Mokapu).

Very likely. Diamond head area - US Gov controlled, could very well be.

Probably the ventilation and power supply for the tunnels. I'll drop by some time and check it out for you. At first I thought it was the road to the Salvation Army facility, but that's further toward town.

    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.390918,-158.099769

Looks like someone's farm. Notice up to the right the driveway exposed, while even the road is covered by trees.

Is this a house? It's HUGE!
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.62865,-157.921584

I used to pass that on occasion (it's visible from Kam Hwy.) but never gave it a second thought. May be a vacation rental - lots of those near the ocean. You noted the pool? The tennis courts? Maybe a club of some kind? I never looked close enough for a sign.

Speaking of houses, this is something I noticed while flying. Is this someone's house? It's way in the middle of nowhere in Mililani Mauka:
    http://maps.google.com/?q=21.482962,-157.971447

Probably the owner of the prolific orchards between the house and the road.

Anyone else notice any mysteries "hiding" in plain sight or on Google maps?
I'll see if they're still there.

Well, sure, there are probably all kinds of mysterious metal doors on base, but the door I'm talking about opens 4' above H1 at one of its busiest spots. (Under the Punahou St. bridge.)

It's in the Diamond Head area, but it seems to go under Wilhelmina Rise.

I centered the map on the largest cluster, but I was referring more to all the buildings along Palehua Rd there. I could never tell what they were from a distance, and I never flew close enough to one of them to see them better. They didn't look like luxury homes, but they didn't look like farms either.

        Yep:
This is an anomaly in Greenland. Far away, but interesting.

I always wonderered about this place down from Red hill, above Salt Lake, visible from H201 townbound. Driveway is gated and unmarked. Looks like a huge estate home. Damon?

Don't know about the other sites, but I'm guessing that what you saw above Makakilo was probably Camp Timberline. From the FAQ's on their website:

          "Where is Camp Timberline?

Camp Timberline is located 3 miles above Makakilo, at an elevation of 1,600 feet."

            Wow, some barely visible.

I used to do a column in the Star-Bulletin called Wat Dat? that answers some of these questions. Here are some:

Yes! I've always wondered what that was! I got several good looks at it since the departure I used most frequently (Red Hill 3) took me very close to that building while still at relatively low altitudes. I'd always look down on it and wonder what the hell it was. It looks like a massive old-Hawaii-style luxury private residence.

It probably is a pumping station or electrical station. They had to excavate when they built that portion of the freeway to go under Punahou St.

Burl, "Wat Dat?" was one of my favorite columns in the Star-Bulletin!

I had always hoped that the columns would someday be compiled in book form because they were so fascinating. So the link is definitely appreciated!

I'd love to see "Wat Dat?" resurrected. Maybe it could alternate with "Whatever Happened To...?"

p.s. I still think you should do a book.

Verrry interesting thread! Wandering Google Earth is a fave pastime at our house; you never know what you will see. We love looking over the remote uninhabited Pacific islands.

And we are still on the lookout for the silos, too.

I've always wondered what this spot is, which is not too far behind Tripler Medical Center. Whatever it is, it's not Tripler's helipad.
