    Re: Hmmm

She was a friend of a friend. We were all very sad to hear this news. Makes me wish even more that we had more bike-friendly streets, especially with so many tour buses. I know how difficult it is to see bikes when they are making a turn. And bicyclists are definitely guilty of darting in and around cars to try and short-cut things...

I think FM's original assessment is more likely the reason here. Basically bad editing.

Craig, I think you need to backtrack a little,.... if you want to understand the reporter's rationale in using the word "apparently" in that breaking news article.

When the reporter wrote the bicyclist died "after apparently being struck by a Roberts Hawaii tour bus," the reporter's use of the word "apparently" wasn't referring to the identity of the tour bus involved in the accident. Rather, the reporter appears to be referring to whether or not the bus "struck" the bicylist. Keep in mind that you are picking on what was then a breaking news story. So at the time, the account of what happened was still sketchy. The reporter might have talked to people who say it was the tour bus driver who hit the bicylist as he was making a turn, but until the reliability of those witness accounts can be determined, it's dangerous to jump to conclusions and to make statements with no qualifications that assigns blame or fault to a particular party. Sure, the reporter goes to the scene of the accident and sees a mangled bicycle underneath the tour bus. Does it automatically mean that it was the tour bus that struck the bicycle? What if it later turned out that a whole bunch of other eyewitnesses say that it was the bicyclist who rode straight into the pathway of a tour bus that was already making the turn? Do you see the problem in making a premature statement with no qualifications?

If the accident is still being investigated by HPD and not all the facts have been established, it can be wise for a reporter to qualify the account of what happened.

A 21-year-old female bicyclist who appeared to be in her 20s died after apparently being struck by a Roberts Hawaii tour bus at Dillingham Boulevard and Waiakamilo Road at 3:57 p.m. today.
