Not responding to the question, but offering a resource which might otherwise help: Auntie Helen Nakano is a local champion of keeping Hanafuda alive. Here is her website: http://www.hanafudahawaii.com
Rules for different versions of the game: http://www.hanafudahawaii.com/games.html
Aloha!

Re: anyone know how to play hanafuda? I have a question
While I know the existence of Hanafuda and seen it played by others I never experienced the game myself. However doing a quick check on Wikipedia yielded this entry:
The major difference is that the standard set of playing cards is 52 cards with 4 suits in 13 ranks, while a Hanafuda deck is 48 cards with 4 suits in 12 ranks. I guess if you want to use a standard deck to play Hanafuda you should remove the 4 Kings and assign the other ranks as so:- Ace - January
- Two - February
- Three - March
- Four - April
- Five - May
- Six - June
- Seven - July
- Eight - August
- Nine - September
- Ten - October
- Jack - November
- Queen - December
As far as how you going to assign the Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades suits will maybe you should discuss it and consult with the table in the Wikipedia with the other player before you play.

is there a way to translate the game over to a regular deck of cards?
I ask because a big barrier in my understanding of the game is "translating" what these sets and cards really mean. I have nothing to relate to.
thx
