Awareness bracelets? Aren't those so last month?

A coworker was the first person I ever saw with an Armstrong "LIVESTRONG" bracelet. Months ago. I thought it was cool. The minute he started seeing others popping up, he took his off. Now I'll bet he's an oddity in some circles for not having one on his wrist.

What I don't get is, they sell blank bracelets now, at Wal-Mart for example. Just having the ring of rubber seems to be the point now, not the message - and even when there was a message, their usefulness was suspect!

Colored ribbons. Car magnets. Awareness bracelets. Bumpersticker culture to the extreme!

very much so, they jumped the shark as soon as it hit, in my mind.
BUT... they remain alive and well among those that need to scream they are aware of the cause du jour.

Here's a site if ya need a real fix.
      and oh look;
one for the goth crowd. or grateful dead fans. take yer pick.

It's all about group identity. In the face of an increasingly heterogeneous society, people want to be able to find and identify others who belong to the same group, whether it may be based on religion, ethnicity, politics, military service, common diseases , what have you. Otherwise, how can you tell who's who?

well, I guess in that perspective i should be happy; I can now recognize someone different than me when i exclaim and point "Oh. Look there's somone so aware and against the evil of breast cancer, they bought a ninety nine cent rubber bracelet!
and voila. i identified that group.
Quick! where's the beer bracelet wearers!?

The group identity angle would work for me and almost make sense. But because most of these are (or were!) related to charities and other "noble causes," it seems to me to be something a little less admirable. It's not enough to live a good life. Now we want to be recognized for it.

Don't get me wrong, I have the same instincts. I sure hope when I die I can leave some school enough cash to get a building named after me! And who doesn't like seeing their name in 2-point-type in the back of a charity group's newsletter? Hell, yeah, I want that HPR T-shirt and Sierra Club backpack!

But now we're mixing "good works" with "fashion" and "cool," and it's getting a little muddy. Are you wearing that bracelet because your life was touched by earlobe cancer, or just because you want to proclaim that You Care Plenty(tm), and are therefore one sub-ounce of rubber better than someone without one?

Thanks for the link. This is like those annoying ribbon pins people ruin their Oscar gowns with. The smug message: "I care about breast cancer/AIDS/world hunger/dyslexic kittens." Yeah, and I don't?

Last night I had a dream that I met someone who organizes "Live Aid"-type concerts. I asked him, "Do you really think a bunch of people singing in New York is going to solve world hunger? It's a little more complex than that."

I dreamt a similar thing too. He didn't respond, so I shot him in the eye with my blindness awareness rubber band bracelet.

I just wear my $9.95 black plastic Casio watch as a reminder of who I am now...much simpler and free from the sins of jewelry and I leave my solid gold Rolex Presidential in my drawer.

As for awareness, it's one thing to be aware, it's better to be proactive because if you're not part of the solution, well I think you've got a slight problem there.

You want save the earth from world hunger, then invite a homeless person into your home for dinner. That's one less hungry man/woman/child in this world and you can then say, "I'M FULL AND SO IS HE" and really mean it.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

Re: those lil bracelets with words on em....

I took my LIVESTRONG bracelet off a while back because I felt it was just every where. When that hurricane hit the Cayman Islands last week, The Advertiser ran a picture of tourists all sleeping or so in this big gym or something. I said to my husband, "Count the yellow bracelets!" there were tons.

But I happen to admire Lance Armstrong. I don't care if some people think he's a jerk. I like his girlfriend and sing her songs contantly. He's given a lot of people hope. I hope he takes advantage of his momentum and really helps his cause to beat Cancer. I especially like wearing it because when I'm in my Pilates or Yoga classes and I feel like I'm getting mangled, I think of this guy who had cancer throughout his body. Then I think about how he can climb mountains on a Trek. Then I think of people who are healthy and can't do that.

And bear with me one more time, I think of Eduardo, the guy with Muscular Dystrophy who would ride his specially fitted bicycle up and down Kalanianaole Hwy; now he scoots around on his motorized wheel chair, but darn it he's OUT THERE.

OK. So that's why I'm going to keep wearing it. I'll pass on the camo, pink, blue, rainbow, or whatevers.
                      Aloha from Lavagal

Go to Lulu's on a Tuesday night. Find the guy with the microphone. Shaka for Steinlager. They give you one bracelet with the beer logo.
