  • Makeover Help

I'm in the process of having a complete make make over the "hard way!" No surgeries, no botox, etc. Exercising, walking, and running. Ladies, I need some major advice. When the transformation is done, what is the best yet affordable make-up that is available for one of my age that won't make me look like a clown but a refined woman. I don't want a make-up that is over bearing but one that enhances. I have been so used to without the finer things in life so long that I don't know where to start pampering myself again. I appreciate any advice you can give.

      Re: Makeover Help

First thing is go to the day spa (SPA AT HONOLULU CLUB 808-543-3945
HONOLULU, HI 96814 ) in Honolulu (ask your kids to chip in and get that for you as an early Christmas or birthday present). You will be totally pampered from head to toe and will feel like a million bucks. After that, go to one of the best hair salons in town (anybody have suggestions?) Let them do your hair and they usually have someone who does makeup (the spa might also have a makeup artist). Whatever you do, don't go to the Macy's beauty counter and have them put makeup on you! It's not sanitary for one thing, and for another, they usually are only trying to sell you stuff.

I think the best off-the-shelf makeup is from Shiseido or Clinique, but other wahines might have other favorites. I rarely use makeup because it plugs up the pores.

      Hope that helps.

The only things I really "splurge" on are foundation and concealer (I prefer Clinique), because I find that it's difficult to find properly matching shades for my skin tone otherwise. I also like Clinique's built in SPF and the slight golden shimmer (plenty available without the shimmer too!) that makes me look sun-kissed, even though I spend a lot of my time during the day in windowless ORs! It's very subtle, just enough to make my face look less pasty yellow.

As far as learning what works best for you makeup-wise:

Call Sephora in Ala Moana Mall (944.-9797) and schedule an appointment for one of their complimentary makeovers. They carry most major makeup lines and can help tailor makeup to suit your tastes and according to your preferences/needs.

Thanks Shelpa! Not yet, I still have about two months of work to do. Then I'll splurge on my new look! I want to experiment with the make-ups next month. At least I am getting a bit of information now. I can always count on hawaii threads.com!

I started using Merle Norman make up when I was still in high school and it really is good stuff. You can get a FREE make over done at any Merle Norman Studio. You do NOT have to buy a thing to get it....and if you do choose to buy any of it, I highly recommend the foundation. I like the water based one that comes in a tube. It does NOT sweat off for me and I do some serious sweating at times. They also have a foundation that comes in a little jar, which I used for many years, and I like it too. I like the loose face powder too. I do like their creme rouge, and have used their powder rouge, or blush or what ever they call it. *LOL* I know you know what is rouge, heh heh heh. I use different kinds of mascara, have never tried Merle Norman eye make up at all, so I cannot say any thing about it. I do not care for the cold cream......I just do not like cold cream at all of any kind. I cannot remember using any Merle Norman lipstick, but it was the only kind my Mother ever used and she loved it. I wash all my make up off with soap and water....of course they will try and sell you cold cream, toner, moisturizer, etc.

To sum it up I like Merle Norman foundation, loose face powder and blush.

              Hope this helps.

PS they also will give you tons of samples to take home and use before you actually buy.

                  Re: Makeover Help

For foundation, test it on your neck near your collar bone. Your face gets the sun so you'll always get foundation that's too dark and hard to blend into your jawline if you test there, testing on your inner arm will get you a foundation that's too light. The neck gets a little sun but is still somewhat shaded by your jaw so it'll give you a good in-between and an earthy blusher will bring up the color for your face without getting too strong. You won't have to fight the jawline mask look then either.

Hi Dennis! Yeah, I seen the sign but wasn't certain if it really was a SPA! I remember it as Kotori's...oh, how I remember it! LOL I'll check it out. Thanks!

                            Auntie Lynn:

If price is a concern I highly recommend you simply buy your cosmetics from Longs or Walmart. You'll find, in many cases, the same high-quality makeup you find at Macy's or Nordstroms. Also, if you keep your receipt, you can take back the product for a full refund or exchange if you find the makeup isn't right for you after trying it on at home.

Check out this article on the economics of makeup:

                            Good luck!

Eh, aunty, if you need some company, then you know my number! I need to start losing weight also.

Oh yeah, and drink a lot of water instead of sodas and other stuff. (and try to quit smoking again. Think of your grandson.)
How'd I get so white and nerdy?
