Chinese New Year Celebrations

Does anyone know when the Chinese Celebrations for their New Year begin here on Oahu? Last year, I had to "hear" the noise from Chinatown to know that something was going on. This year, I'd like to see, hear, & have fun ~ Food, Crafts, Entertainment, and of course the unforgetable Silent Community that I know of so well!

I work in Chinatown, and folks in our building are prepping for festivities on Friday evening, January 27. The fun starts at 7 p.m. There's also a big open house on Saturday at the Chinese Cultural Center.

I'll be around for the Centennial Night celebration on Sat (Jan. 21). I'm meeting friends around 3:30pm to watch the parade (4pm). Then we'll wander around and eat our way through all the festivities.

Afterward I'm hoping to check out the Loose Screws comedy Improv show at Marks Garage.

Maybe I'll see some of you out and about (eh, Auntie Lynn?)!

This coming year is not just the Year of the Dog, but to be more specific it's the Year of the Fire Dog. In addition to the twelve animals, the years are also marked by the five elements: fire, water, wood, earth, and metal (also called iron), for a 60-year cycle. I always used to wonder about how you would know which element/animal combination to use. This page has a chart that shows the whole cycle.

Wood tiger here. I just knew that -- the online converter thing looks like way too much math for my addled brain!

Tomorrow night is the big festivities on the block where I work here in Chinatown, starting at 7 p.m. Lion dances and fireworks starting at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce near the corner of N. King and Smith. I'll be there taking pictures!

Yeah, I wouldn't want to do the math either. But you see how there's that matrix with the combinations all numbered, from 1 to 60? If you know your own birth year's combination, then it's not that hard to figure out what the current year is.
