    Re: AlohaWorld

I don't like "upper 48" at all, especially since in space, there's no such thing as up or down. Northern 49 works for me, or just "continental u.s." or just "mainland." "Mainland" when referring to a larger landmass that is affiliated with smaller islands is totally normal use, whether it originated HERE as a military thing or not. The mainland United States is what it is.

As for CONUS, let's just say I'm counting down the days until January when I am going to propose its complete banishment from the lexicon. Forbidden Words: 2008 Edition. It's just ridiculous.

My, Scriv, how you've changed! That makeup really makes you look like a whole 'nother person!

BTW: I prefer CONUS to "Mainland"

Ditto from me, Scriv, as I noticed your avatar change instantly too. Gotta be a story there, so ... ? Your new avatar is TutuSue's real photo, or ...?

Ho! Okay den. You and Leo and Scriv, pickypickypicky.
Actually, I did think of that after I clicked. I was thinking along the lines that, on the mainland when figuring out shipping rates, it's always referred to as the "lower 48". As in "free shipping to the lower 48".

              Scriv, you so cute.

I grew up with the tag line "prices slightly higher in Alaska and Hawai`i" on every TV commercial.

I am a fish out of water over here in the land of the enemy...a round peg in a square hole. The Ohana Lanai has opened up a window on a world that I thought was lost to me.

It's true that a lot of us over there are ex-pats, and lean on each other in times of Alohaless. Sometimes it must feel like maybe there's private jokes and stuff that someone just lurking doesn't understand. But that happens here, too....and I can tell you from experience that it's easier to be 'accepted' there than here....at least at first. (some of you must remember my first bungling attempts to fit in here)

But I can pretty much promise you that if you show up, that they'll be kind to you....and if you still live in Hawaii, you'll be asked for all kinds of news from the islands, too. And if you stick around and get to know them, you might even enjoy yourself, too.

One other thing....it's not a good idea to poop in the nest. Many of the posters here go to the Lanai, too...and visa-versa. You don't really want to get yourself a reputation for being a snob, do you?
big loveable hugs to Susie!!!! Pua ting, stuck in the land of the enemy!

seriously, I do feel for you. Your children are Frenchlings; your love for them and need to be in their lives is greater than your need to be back in the isles. You make the right decision, but the cost is high. My heart tears for you.

and I will full-contact thumb-wrestle ya to keep it in. I *hate* the term "mainland" more than you find CONUS reviling.

Shall we find common ground, and call it America? After all, America is the continent, and while we may be US citizens, we are thousands of miles away from America.

I think I can see now, how the old-time picture brides must've felt....and they never had the Internet to help them.

(My Mom will be here to visit us...all the way from Hilo...she arrives in the morning...YAY!)

Hopefully your mom is bringing you some local kine grinds too, to help make the isolation a little more easy to take.
