Re: AlohaWorld
One of the very few Hawaii sites I found that catered to expats was AlohaWorld and the Ohana Lanai. Because of the lanai, I met Nancy who lives in NH (she also teaches bellydancing and hula). And through Nancy I've joined and met several members of the New England Club of Hawaii.
The AlohaWorld site is wonderful and indeed, Koni and Izzie do a fab job with it. The recipes section is very useful....I use it frequently and also contribute as much as I can to it as well.

Re: AlohaWorld
I've met Koni and Izzie and they are fun. The provide a lot of aloha to ex-pats living on the mainland and abroad. Everyone should visit to practice writing pidgin.I haven't posted in a while to "small kid time."

Re: AlohaWorld
While watching Lost on TV last night, I came up with an idea to replace calling the other 49 states CONUS or the mainland.
We could call them...
The Others.

Maybe we call it Haoleville?
And I don't use "haole" when talking about different lahui.

seriously, I do feel for you. Your children are Frenchlings; your love for them and need to be in their lives is greater than your need to be back in the isles. You make the right decision, but the cost is high. My heart tears for you.

The mainland United States is what it is.
As for CONUS, let's just say I'm counting down the days until January when I am going to propose its complete banishment from the lexicon. Forbidden Words: 2008 Edition. It's just ridiculous.
Shall we find common ground, and call it America? After all, America is the continent, and while we may be US citizens, we are thousands of miles away from America.

I am a fish out of water over here in the land of the enemy...a round peg in a square hole. The Ohana Lanai has opened up a window on a world that I thought was lost to me.
It's true that a lot of us over there are ex-pats, and lean on each other in times of Alohaless. Sometimes it must feel like maybe there's private jokes and stuff that someone just lurking doesn't understand. But that happens here, too....and I can tell you from experience that it's easier to be 'accepted' there than here....at least at first. (some of you must remember my first bungling attempts to fit in here)
But I can pretty much promise you that if you show up, that they'll be kind to you....and if you still live in Hawaii, you'll be asked for all kinds of news from the islands, too. And if you stick around and get to know them, you might even enjoy yourself, too.
One other thing....it's not a good idea to poop in the nest. Many of the posters here go to the Lanai, too...and visa-versa. You don't really want to get yourself a reputation for being a snob, do you?

Actually, I did think of that after I clicked. I was thinking along the lines that, on the mainland when figuring out shipping rates, it's always referred to as the "lower 48". As in "free shipping to the lower 48".
