  • Hawaii boating photos

I figure the "HT Photo Sharing Thread" in the Workshop section is really more about photography as a hobby, and perhaps folks were getting tired of seeing the boating photos there, so... this thread is for those who want to see 'em and also will post some of their own. And it seems more appropriate here in the "Player's Place" section, for obvious reasons.
The photos in this post (and the next few posts to follow) were all taken at today's race on Kaneohe Bay.

            Pau.
Although if you're a glutton for punishment, all 54 photos from today are in a slideshow at this link.

To borrow a line from another HT'er: "Well thanks for your time."

Have fun with it! The photos are the untouched and uncropped originals.
I get a chuckle out of the last one, where it looks like Keith (steering the boat) is ducking to stay under the airplane.
I'm curious to hear which one is your favorite.

Really, really hard to choose a favorite...
Guess the second shot of Ho'okahiko.

If I was a dog and my owner's name pavlov...
                I'd be salivating for sure.

Thanks for the Great sailing shots!

Which is a P-3 Orion, the aircraft involved in the Hainan Island incident.

                  Wow. Awesome photo!

That would be the last shot in post #2, with the closeup of the cockpit and Ron looking over and grinning, right? Ho`okahiko is a Bristol Channel Cutter 28, and Ron just returned recently from a cruise to Tahiti on it. Had one crew with him going down there, and singlehanded it home. 21 days each way.
I like that photo too, but I kinda feel my own favorite is the very first photo (Miki`oi) in post #1.

Ah yes, good old Pavlovian Response. But I think his training regimen involved food as rewards, not boats. That silly landlubber.

Thanks for the Great sailing shots!
I'm looking forward to seeing boating shots from you and other HT'ers too!
Totally overcast and frequently rainy over here today, so probably will do some work on the boat instead of going out with it.

Right. And those are the planes they want to phase out and replace, as I recall.
That particular one was getting ready for takeoff. It's even more fun sailing right there when the P-3's are coming in for a landing and are maybe 100' over the top of the mast.

                    Wow. Awesome photo!
Thanks. I saw that opportunity coming and just got lucky.

                        Photoshop Angle Strokes filter

                        Extrude filter

                        Graphic Pen filter

I'll try applying a Stippling effect (fine dotted lines, usually using a Rapidograph pen) later. It requires some tweaking using the high pass filter.

                          Stippling effect...

This was done by converting the image to grayscale, increasing the contrast (to make the meaningful lines of the boat more distinguishable), then converting the image again to bitmap and adjusting the output.

Dang, Pomai, I love that effect. Down the road I want to take some photos of palm trees and turn 'em B&W and graphically interesting, blow 'em up (well, you know what I mean!), frame 'em then hang 'em in my town condo. You're giving me some great ideas altho' I'm not a PS-slut...don't even own it! Possibly my beloved Adobe PhotoDeluxe (Mac OS 9!!!) will work. Should be fun.
