    Re: Deadly Flu Virus

Four sick Indionesian nurses, all of them having had contact with the last two BF family cluster victims. So far, they nest negative (this often happens, at first).

The UN's WHO has said that they fear the BF situation, in Indonesia, may get out of control.

What more do you need, to go out and prep!?

I did "prep." I decided to go back to Italy this year, or perhaps Scotland, instead of Indonesia.

Interesting that you should mention Italy, Maddie. Just today I received a url for the photos my daughter took on her trip to Italy last month. She was part of a group of 7 who visited the Amalfi Coast and Umbria. They stayed in a beautiful villa in Todi. I think Italy is luring Staci away from a possible move back home to Hawaii

One more sick baby, in Indonesia. This time, the victim is in TOTAL isolation.

AND....Indonesia has said that, yes, there HAVE been human to human transmissions, in some of the recent family clusters. No wonder the poor baby is in isolation.

                Bugger!

                Please go and prep.

I have not had time to read the entire thread and apologize if this link has been posted before, but I think it would serve some of us well if we checked out the official CDC info about the avian flu:

                  http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/index.htm

I remember the SARS scare of a few years ago. Every patient we had who had been even remotely connected to travel to Asia was quarantined until cleared.

Not one case in Hawaii, IIRC. Hopefully, it will be the same for the Avian Flu.

Nice to have you, here. Could you please take a peek, at the 'practical preps' thread, and fill in some blanks?

                      I took a look.

While I do believe it is wise to have a bit of stockpiled bottled water, canned goods, non-perishables, and personal essentials, I find it hard to get into the "doomsday prep" mode without any evidence of a real "doomsday" looming in my immediate future.

Just think. You could be prepared to the max for a major catastrophe and then slip in the shower, hit your head, and die. All that angst for nothing.

                      That's just life, eh?

At what point would you consider a pandemic 'looming'?

(this is a question for everybody)

For me, it would be on the advice of at least the State of Hawaii Department of Health saying that such a disease is going to hit Hawaii soon.

Other than that right now, whatever things I will be buying to stock up on would be for the event of a hurricane.

On May 12, 2006 #25 I posted the following information:

                            In today's StarBulletin: http://starbulletin.com/2006/05/12/news/story09.html

                            "State opens online pandemic resource"

"Islanders who want to know more about avian flu and how to prepare for a possible global pandemic can find comprehensive information on a new state Department of Health Web page."

Helen, It's always great to prepare. I did. I have also learned over the weeks not to get worked up and "paranoid" over it. Anything can happen. When it is our time to go ~ we will go.

When I started this thread it was to make others aware of the Avian Flu/Bird Flu/Pandemic and for others members to post updates as well. All of us have our own beliefs and ways in which we live our lives. We can only "give our opinions." No one's way of life is better, safer, or full proof from harm. We are all Humans.

Respect and Smile is what I've learned to do these past few weeks in reading some of the posts. Life itself can be taken at anytime. Yes, please do prepare. Don't go overboard. Above all ~ don't ever get PARANOID!

                              Re: Deadly Flu Virus

I haven't read much about preparing for a pandemic but what always amazes me about such articles is how the health care community is portrayed---as if WE, garbed as we will be in our incredibly uncomfortable medical hazmat gear, are not going to be touched by illness and death. That WE will be there, no questions asked, to care for the sick and dying.
I would imagine that many nurses and physicians will not be all that willing to risk their lives and the lives of their own loved ones by continually exposing themselves to the victims of a pandemic.
I almost hate to say this in a public forum but I have heard many fellow nurses say that they would not show up if called to work in a pandemic treatment center. Personally, I don't know what I would do. If my family were ill at home, would I leave them and rush in to give aid to strangers?
As with any pandemic, there will be those who will be naturally immune to the virus. It has been so throughout history, even with the AIDS virus (google "delta 32" for more info). We can hope that it will be so with whatever hits us next.
As far as when I would feel a pandemic was "looming"? I would go with the CDC bulletins, warnings, and recommendations. They tend to be quite level-headed about these things. I would also be inclined to ignore media hype and "movie of the week" crap.
Bottled water and cheese-in-a-can, some vodka for medicinal purposes only. My survival kit....

                                Re: Deadly Flu Virus

If I remember correctly, Canada has passed a law, making it illegal for health-care workers to stay home, during a pandemic. I guess that it's their way of prepping.

I suspect that we may need healthy health-care workers more after, than during. Perhaps...if a pandemic should be as bad as feared...flu cases should be refused, in order to try to continue with the 'normal' rest of the world's illnesses?

'Social distancing', and trying to avoid catching an illness, is sounding better and better.
