I would recommend Dr. Aaron Nada. He's my dad's nephrologist and he also teaches at the medical school. He's with a group with Dr. David Ono, Dr. Leilani Kaanehe and newly added associate Dr. Ireland. You might need to get a referal from your Internal Medicine physician.
A good, caring group, IMHO. I especially like Leilani.
Auntie...my mom was a Nurses Aide at St. Francis Hospital back in the 60's and 70's...Margaret Watanabe. She's now retired but her last stint there was working with the ER.
Hey! Craig!! I worked at St. Francis during the 70's too! I remember your mom. Give her my Aloha! NA's make excellent MOM's!!!
I, too worked many years at St. Francis Hospital-Liliha. Unlike you, I was a NA. I worked all the floors from Critical Care to Oncology. I got burned out and decided another field was better for me. However, working at St. Francis taught many things in Life.

I've been trying to find a kidney doctor since May 22, and I'm just wondering if it usually takes this long to get an appointment with a nephrologist, or if I'm using the wrong doctors or procedures. Any helpful info you can throw my way would help ease the knots in my stomache.
Thanks,
lin

Your post concerns me as a former employee, as a daughter of a patient and also having Ohana as patients there. I thank you for posting such an informative and alarming personal experience in which you have seen for yourself.
Because of it, I am not taking it lightly. My MAMA's life is very special to me. As well as my Ohana and everyone else in the community. I will personally make sure your comment is seen by many of the physicians, nurses and employees whom I know ~ who are affliated with St. Francis Hospital. I know many.

Mahalo,

Alyn, I would just like to make it clear that it was never my intention to imply that there are no good people who work at SFH. I worked with many good nurses and ancillary personnel in the ICU (and as I said before, some good physicians too). I am still in contact with people who work there. I would not wish the good people who are still at St. Francis to be hurt by my opinions which were never meant to be a blanket condemnation of all the workers there.
My previous statements reflect my personal opinion----others may be happy with treatment they have received there and with their personal physicians. As you stated, you felt that your Mama received excellent care there.
If you are comfortable with the care your loved ones have received and have confidence in your physicians then I sincerely do not want to upset you at a time when you need to have faith and confidence in your health care providers.
You also seem to be the type of person who will be close at hand when your Mama is hospitalized and will certainly notice if something is amiss.
i know, but so much hassle. worse, my dr. is affiliated with that hospital..ergh.... also with Queens though. just i dont want to be stressed out! my mom and sister says too since they were my eyes and ears at the time,
Bottom Line ~ you suffered needlessly. They didn't give quality care as expected by "Professionals." Code of Ethics!

i would also have to voice out that Kuakini Hospital is one of the other hospitals that people should avoid going to. i am still deciding on a lawsuit on that one. it is documented about the type of care i received while i was there for several months. they forgot to chart meds, luckily my sister was there and would ask why / what they were giving to me when i already took it less than an hour ago. i was in critical care and no one would check in on me for hours.. my mom found me hanging off the bed with the cord wrapped around my neck while i was in a coma. they wouldn't tell me what they were giving me ..i went in for a heart condition and i was on the wrong floor, and the dr asked me if i thought i had adequate care..doh! thee would complain about coming in to check on me or if i call them because they had other things to do and why not ask my family. at that time, i was bedridden for 2 months. blah! bad memories!

I am happy to hear that your family member has received good care at St. Francis-Liliha. I am sure that many patients have, and wish her the best in her future visits.
However, I can not dismiss what I have seen on the basis of anecdotal testimonials. I have been a critical care nurse for years (originally from metropolitan area NY), and can only re-iterate that, based on my personal experience as a nurse at SFH-Liliha, I would never willingly subject myself or my loved ones to treatment there.
As stated before, their solid-organ transplant program is the only option in the state. The program founded by Dr. Livingston Wong and carried on by his daughter Dr. Linda Wong and her associates is exemplary. I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Linda Wong's skill as a surgeon. I was pleased to work with her general surgical and liver and kidney transplant patients---she is a professional of the highest order.
To address other areas of care, I was truly horrified and appalled at some of the things I saw going on there, perpetrated by physicians. Ethical travesties, IMHO. I will not go into details here but, based on my years of working there, there is a huge list of physicians that I would never allow near me or my loved ones. The very saddest part is that it seems to me that they practice without censure there---their ethics committee is out to lunch, IME.

Reason: In retrospect, it just looked damn weird.
i would agree. i hate st. francis liliha/west and i've been a patient at both. i don't care for their nurses or their patient care. the thing that sucks is that st francis is the only option for kidney patients needing a transplant.
