Even more Bizarre than Scrivener's imagination!!!

I was posting about global warming, talking about when Dinosaurs became extinct (the big one). When I thought to myself, "Hey if your planet was dying and you had enough time to terraform another, how would you do it?

Let's say the planet you want to move to is too hot, how would you cool it down? Throw a solar blanket over it to keep the sun's rays from heating it up.

How do you do that globally? Direct a major asteroid to impact it's surface and put a cloud of dust into the air and cool the surface off that way.

It may take a looonnnnnggg time but if you knew it and had the time, then why not?

Take Venus...it's very hot, too hot for us Humans. Kick up some of that venutian dust and shield it from the Sun and oh my it's getting cooler, hey like an ice age! Man has adapted to the absolute zero degree tempuratures of space so we can adapt to another ice age too. But if your planet is a lost cause, what the heck turn in that old beater for one you can rebuild while you still drive that old clunker till it dies.

So we redirect an asteroid to pummel into the surface of Venus. Viola instant global climatic change and the process begins.

    Hey it's a thought!

    Craig:

It's Aloha Friday, No Work 'til Monday Song Lyrics

    c 1982 Paul Natto

Here is where I sit, all cloudy and blitzed

with the Primo bottles lying everywhere

Got a guitar in my hand and a Wesson Oil can

Under my okole for a chair.

    CHORUS:

It's Aloha Friday, no work till Monday.

Doo be doo, doo doo be, doo be doo be doo be doo!

    (Repeat)

The cousins all here, drinking up my beer

    got keikies running everywhere.

I got some poki on the side while mama's trying to hide

the Miller and the Heineken beer.

    (CHORUS)

OK. You know when you wanna get away, I mean one ting

about Friday ma, da working work is ovah yeah.

Frankly, ya, I feel good man.

I work hard all week long.

I can't wait to get away, you know like down like the beach.

I'm cruise dis weekend yeah, get one hot concert too man,

dat's the most important ting. But main ting too,

is to get enough money fo gas and to go out to da disco.

I like to see all da beautiful chicks Yeah!

So now I gonna jus kinda cruise, take my Bank Americard,

you know adderwise, how can I get money?

Right, plus den my friends always say

eh braddah, you can buy me one drink then.

    THIRD VERSE

Kimo and the crew sucking up the brew

pulehu meat smoking on the side

    All the surfers are a-droppin'

    while the highschool are a-poppin'

    down Kaluakaua for a ride.

    CHORUS:

It's Aloha Friday, no work 'til Monday.

Doo be doo, doo doo be, doo be doo be doo be doo!

    REPEAT
    Aloha from Lavagal

Given this thread, along with that whole Bobbitt thing, I gotta second that query.

But, in a likely futile attempt to rescue this, I gotta ask... do you think it'd be easier to cool a hot planet, or heat a cold planet? I mean, we're obviously experts at warming things up... maybe we should move further out rather than further in.

Scientifically speaking, it's more energy-efficient to cool down than to heat up.

In the movie "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", Arthur Dent ends up at this giant planet factory where they churn out new ones like Toyotas every day it seems. I'd start there and build a new earth to order. Earth 2... Or something like that.
            I'm still here. Are you?

Once you get the temperature challange fixed, you need to make sure you have sufficient oxygen in the atmosphere to sustain life, without any gasses that is poisonous to man int the atmosphere, or we will have to constantly have suits that provide us with our own atmosphere to sustain our life (I guess we stop eating beans in that case or walk around with a blue cloud in our suits [from the green sweat or blue farts thread]). Next you will have to find sources of water for we need water to sustain life. Yes, we could manufacture water, but need to make sure the ingredients are in abundant supply (oxygen and hydrogen).

I guess it is truly easier to save the earth.
Whoa, Mista Buss Driva, eh, you can stop the buss o wat?

                      Re: Making Another Earth

This thread is reminding me of the treadmill of angst that I run upon, as a National Geographic subscriber. I cannot help it but I both dearly love that mag, and hate, Hate, HATE what it does to me after reading each issue. I fret about the carbon I exhale, have micromoments each day when I wonder "when is this piece of trash going to decompose?" and zero in on every faucet that drips precious water. I become fascinated to see some 2000 year old mummified chick and recoil instinctively that we are robbing a grave for the sake of science.

And then there is science fiction as an ever-increasing genre. When I was a kid, we were forced to read Bradbury. Star Trek was for geeks. Star Wars was mainstream-cool, but it wasn't real™, and Dune only went up to God Emperor in the series. Nowadays, everybody reads science fiction, as if it is some life-important curricula.

And today we wonder about moving to Mars or Venus (I know, too hot; kidding)

                      bah!

                      </rant, piss, hiss, moan>

                        Re: Making Another Earth

Another question-Would it be better to try to concieve a way to do this or instead focus energy and resources on inter-galactic travel? Because there are many more solar systems that probably have planets situated as such to allow for human life to exist. That said...

It would probably be better to scrap the whole idea of constructing a planet and just go with a space station(s). Probably be hella cheaper, plus you'd be able to contain an atmosphere and regulate temperature as long as you were within resonable distance from the sun. If it ran on nuclear power you could go decades before maintenance and "refueling".
"Hey fool, we gots yo leada!"
"But I can't even read good."
"Whatever that means, you ____ peasant."
"That (stuff) is the MOST BALLER THING EVAAA!!!!"

                          Re: Making Another Earth

It is important to remember that there have been 5 (five) MAJOR extinctions on planet Earth wherein at least 50% or more of all species have died.

One was the Chixalube Comet that killed the dinosaurs. The earliest was the anaerobic extinction, which happened upon the invention of oxygen and photosynthesis.

Lucky for us, evolution is running just a tick faster than extinction. But try to convince a dogmatic pessimist of that fact.

Funny that the Chixalube comet killed the dinosaurs giving way to Quicklube that is destroying our fossel fuel driven cars to extinction.

Yeah before driving off from Quicklube check to make sure they put the drainplug back in your pan.

Ho boy imagine the Chixalube franchise motto: At Chixalube we took out the Dinosaurs for your driving pleasure.
